Want an easy way to build a Linux system?

The System Designer allows you to design a Linux system profile which can be downloaded onto a single network install image. When inserted into a target system, the boot image will automatically build the system per your design -- all hands free, all via the network, no additional media required.

Neat, but you have to =really= trust those folks. Now, it would be interesting if they had code so you could set up your own internal server for that.

Its an irony IBM wrote a Linux driver for its Thinkpad winmodem but the company geniuses made sure no one could open the serial port in Linux. Go figure. Have never had that kind of problem on HP machines!

Ok:

1) On the main page go to Designer
2) Under hostname or IP leave it blank
3) Set the Distro to Ubuntu Breezy - i386 ( I hear thats a good beginners distro)
4) System Profile: Leave Custom
5) Install Method use HTTP
6) Boot image Ubuntu Preseed ISO
7) Network Waystation (where you will install from) archive.ubuntu.com
8) Time Zone (pick your time zone)
9) Hardware Clock to UTC: Yes
10) Additional language support: ignore
11) Enable Apply current Ubuntu patches during install
12) Automatically apply patches daily
13) Partitioning (autopartition)
14) Disk Scheme leave IDE0:0
15) Enter a root password and another account for regular use
16) Download the ISO and burn it to a CD
17) Stick it in your laptop and boot it up / this will wipe the existing OS on the laptop..

I've been looking at putting Linux on a machine of mine, but haven't decided which distro. In the past I have traditionally used Fedora & Mandrake.

Is there any advantage to using this web page as opposed to just downloading whatever ISO's I want from the source? What is it that this web page would give me above and beyond pointing me towards some ISO files?

Well the web will give you one ISO which would point you towards a repository (rather than ISO's). The advantage is the install action will be hands off and repeatable by using the CD. But to be fair this is nothing you cant do with the CD's its just you don't have to keep a copy around..

Careful, the last time you tried to tell us how hard Linux was I had to post a flash capture of something you said Linux does not do...

Linux...easy? LOL!

Actually once you get used to it--I've seen other students adjust in 3-4 days, usage and reinstalling isn't that hard to figure out, and especially so with graphical installers such as SuSE's YAST.

Last spring when I put SuSE 9.1 on a university laptop and SuSE 9.2 came out, even I could figure out how to pave over the partition, install everything I want, and not disturb the existing XP Pro partition in less than three hours.

I'll grant you some distros are harder to install and aren't meant for beginning users--it took me three tries before I was able to figure out the Slack installer and successfully pave over the SuSE 9.x partition.

Unfortunately, I don't have the laptop--I transferred to another school this past summer. Didn't get the opportunity to ask to make a hd image for backup.

BTW Found this in my mailbox today:

"
OK..

I installed linux and am simply amazed at how good it works...
"

So again you show that you have no concept of how to use Linux and yet try to be an authority on how 'hard it is'
