Years ago, I was a pretty good amateur photographer.
Getting back into it, I've now gone digital (Lumix FZ20)and am looking for some serious editing software w/o going $800+ Photoshop range.
Is there something in between Essentials and CS2?

PaintShop Pro works pretty good, in many cases I use it instead of PhotoShop. I can put Ted Kennedy's head on an orangutan's neck a lot faster with PaintShop.

Try GIMP, the free open-source project. It runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. The Windows version is at gimp-win.sourceforge.net and the main project page is at gimp.org .
GIMP isn't yet at the Photoshop level but it is more powerful than Essentials.
Ditto what swampsniper said
I sometimes use a program called "The Gimp." It's free and has a lot of features.
I concur. PSP is the way to go. Gimp is ok, it's free, but it IS limited. Spend a few bucks and get PSP.
Shouldn't I go for it?
My understanding is that PS is more geared toward professionals.
But PSP 10 at $57.65 is hard to sneeze at.
I use PSP for all my ebay pictures.
It is easy, quick, and super.
Highly recommend.
I only go to my Photoshop when I need to do serious editing. Photoshop if fine, but it's bulky and does far more than I'll ever need.
I see from the ACDSee website they've got a variety of programs. The one I use is the old viewer/editor, version 3.01 (2000).
Yes. Photoshop is excellent. The Lovely Wife uses it often .......along wih Premiere 6.5 for digital video editing. REALLY great stuff.
I am taking an art & design class
However its an Internet class and I wasn't aware when I signed up that Abode Photoshop CS was required and I don't own it
It defeats the purpose of taking an online class if I have to go down to campus just to do my homework so that's why I was thinking of buying it at such a good price
But you have given me the idea of asking my teacher if he would mind me using PSP to do my assignments!
I sure would. The learning curve is quite steep though. I am still learning to use the PS6 I've had for years!
Good site
Bump for later look.
Ha! Putting Uncle Teddy's head on anything is a HUGE task (one should wear a truss).
If you are hoping to work in graphic design, you WILL have to know how to use Photoshop.
You're getting it for a great price. The latest version is CS2; list price is $649.
Photoshop has more features, and does have a steeper learning curve than Paint Shop Pro. I use PSP all the time in my job as a technical writer.
You can download a 30-day free trial version of Photoshop CS2:
