The Hobbit Hole XXVII - And there are many paths to tread...
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 01/16/2006 6:56:15 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And there are many paths to tread

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I think most bike racks would get in the way of opening and shutting the rear door, though. And I'm travelin' on a budget...cheap rope is *vey* cheap. ;-)

I'm probably worrying needlessly about the cats as I've said...it's not like they've never traveled before. Tam used to ride with me every single weekend out to my parents', and Halvah was fine during the 2000 mile trip to CO.

The cats should be fine then if you had traveled with them before.

I go along with Ruthy's suggestion of letting them out for rest stops every so often.

Are you planning on staying at hotels along the way or trying to sleep in the car?

I am not sure where the real roots are. The concept of ghosts and spirits having unfinished business and sticking around shows up in a lot of places and these days it is hard to say what influenced what. In anime it is mainly of course Japanese roots which are Shinto and Buddhist, mainly Shinto. I am not sure how closely related Shinto is to other east asian beliefs.

I'd say to leave them in the carrier and have it up front with you if the front passenger seat can accomodate it.

They'll feel safer seeing you there and you can talk to them and have a feel for if they ~really~ need out or are just being bratty. :-P

Bike: remove the front tire and put it in the back.

Cats: Play some music, talk to them and shoo them away from your feet. They should calm down and find a place to nap after a little while. If they get in the way, start the van, play the radio and stay parked until they settle into some place out of the way. Take a small supersoaker and put it in a cup holder if you are really worried about them getting under foot or on the dashboard (I know Tam is 'smack resistant'). Take them on a few drives between now and when you go to get them use to the idea.

How do you feel about those (picatinny?) rails for attaching stuff to rifles, 300? I can't figure out whether to go for one or not.

Handy if you want a flashlight, detachable laser, or vertical forehand grip. They work nicely for scopes and red-dot sights too depending on where they are mounted. If you don't need any of the above then there is no point. I have them for mounting sights on this:

Whoa...

Just got in from taking the jedis to the park. As we were walking up, we heard this BANG, but nothing more. So the kids went on to run around in the park and this lady and I sat and visited. Pretty soon, we see across the field at the road a fire truck coming, sirens going. So we both agree the bang we heard must have been a car accident...no squealing tires, though...

Pretty soon there was three fire trucks...the last one didn't have it's siren going though.

So we watched for a while, then we see a couple walking their dog coming from the general direction of the accident. They stopped and talked to us and said that a pickup truck had hit a motorcyclist and that the motorcyclist had been thrown up into the air and had flipped up over the truck. I don't know if this is true, but they seemed to know what happened.

What I do know is that they hauled a pickup off in the back of a flatbed truck and eventually all the emergency workers left and not one siren was sounded when they left.

I switched to them on my "target" rifles because you can get the rails with a 20 MOA downward slope. This puts on an automatic elevation increase, allowing a 300 yard zero. That leaves more elevation left in the scope turret to dial in longer ranges.

You get what you pay for, and better rails and rings allow for better repeatibility. At the ranges it's intended for, I can swap the ACOG and Eotech, and not sweat a 1/2 MOA variance. And if the otpics fail, it only takes a second to remove them, and pop up the backup iron sights.

Even on a hunting rifle, I see it as a big benefit if you need to quickly remove a failing scope without needing tools. The only other scope mounts I use are the Leopold dual-dovetail mounts as being the most recoil-proof around. Yuh can't go wrong with Leopold.

Oh, and I dust the inside of the rings with rosin before putting the scope in, to prevent any slippage in the rings. I also lap in the scope rings, but that's just me being a perfectionist.

That doesn't sound good at all!

One of the fire trucks looked like an ambulance, except it was all red, like a firetruck, not white like a normal ambulance. It drove away first, with no siren.

The lady I was visiting with and I both thought that it wasn't a good sign.

How awful. Hope the motorcyclist is OK. :-/

I don't know how folks have the guts to ride those things on city streets. With all of the bad drivers out there, a person is hard-pressed to survive in a car - much less a bike!

I have a friend that lives in the neighborhood nearby...I emailed her and she's looking in to what happened.

I wonder if it'll make the news...

not one siren was sounded when they left.

I think that answers it.

I can't find anything about it online though...at least not yet. All I have to go on is what that couple in the park said.

Well, it could also be that he was uninjured and they didn't bring him in at all... But he'd have been awfully lucky if he got hit that hard.

Hey Rosie... I'm just wondering if there's been any talk yet about routes and timing and such. This time of year is kinda rough passage over the Rockies.

There will be lots of snow and ice between you and here... Any thought given to waiting for March?
