Some Sun Tzu quotes that are applicable to the Miers Nomination
Crush T Velour

Posted on 10/06/2005 11:38:50 AM PDT by Crush T Velour

I think a lot of Conservatives are mad about the Miers nommination because they wanted a fight with Liberals in the Senate and Judiciary Committee. Bush didn't give them one (I think they would get one if they started backing this nomminee but that's beside the point right now), so they are picking a fight with Bush.

Call me a sell-out but I prefer a win. And that is what Miers is to conservatives. She's a gun-toting, anti-abortion evangelical Christian. She's everything the extreme Left wing has been having nightsweats about since Bush was first elected.

All this brings to mind somethings Sun Tzu said about winning battles.

Sun Tzu: "To subdue the enemy without fighting is the supreme excellence"

"No leader should put troops into the field merely to gratify his own spleen; no leader should fight a battle simply out of pique."

"To fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting."

"The general who advances without coveting fame and retreats without fearing disgrace, whose only thought is to protect his country and do good service for his sovereign, is the jewel of the kingdom."

"Those skilled in war subdue the enemy's army without battle. They capture the enemy's cities without assaulting them and overthrow his state without protracted operations."

"The victorious strategist only seeks battle after the victory has been won, whereas he who is destined to defeat first fights and afterwards looks for victory."

"In making tactical dispositions, the highest pitch you can attain is to conceal them."

(and the President's adamant detractors for this and the last nomination should consider this one) "When there is discord within the country the army can not be mobilized. When there is discord in the army it can not take the field. When there is lack of harmony in the field the army can not take the offensive. When there is lack of harmony in battle the army can not win a decisive victory."

Abraham Lincoln once said, "If you are a racist..." um..."I will attack you...with the North."

That's relevant to Harriet Miers, isn't it?

Kudos to the guy who put "Rationalization" as a keyword to this. That's a perfect description.

Gun toting? Where'd you hear that?

As for Sun Tszu's advice, most of it could just as well be what the left is saying right now. In fact, that's what some of us fear. Think about it...

"To subdue the enemy without fighting is the supreme excellence".

"To fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting."

Isn't that exactly what the left has done to us?

A quick confirmation of Miers quickly makes Ruth Buzzy and Co. irrelevant on many issues. She and perhaps one other will leave the SC as soon as they realize their vote doesn't count for much anymore. Liberals do that kind of stuff.

Sounds exactly how the libs have taken over this country.

I'm going back and forth on this. I too, wanted a bench emptying brawl, but on the other hand I recall the Goldwater years somewhat, even though I was young. We all knew "in our hearts" Barry was right, and that we had won the debate against the democrats. But we lost the election. We not only lost we were buried.

What would be the speed of lightening if it didn't zig-zag?

Someone once tried to seriously answer that when I asked it.

"Before we let you leave, your commander must cross that field, present himself before this army, put his head between his legs, and kiss his own arse."
William Wallace

"To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of the women!"
Conan the Barbarian

"Adrian!"
Rocky Balboa

"A rifle is only a tool. It's a hard heart that kills. If your killer instincts are not clean and strong you will hesitate at the moment of truth. You will not kill. You will become dead Marines. And then you will be in a world of shit. Because Marines are not allowed to die without permission! Do you maggots understand?"
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman

William Wallace: Tortured to death.

Conan: Crucified and the only person or thing he loved assassinated

Rocky: Lost.

Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: Killed by his of his own men (with out permission)

The Terminator: Terminated.

These are all losers. heroic losers (mostly), but still losers. What can I say? I prefer to win.

The Schofield Kid: Yeah, well, I guess he had it comin'.

Bill Munny: We all got it comin', kid.

Judging from the Smith & Wesson she once packed, she favors gun rights, too.

Miers once owned a .45-caliber revolver, a gift from a brother who was worried about her safety when she lived alone in Dallas, said Judge Nathan Hecht of the Texas Supreme Court, who has known Miers for 30 years and has dated her.

A decade before the 2001 terrorist attacks, Miers defended constitutional freedoms in a time of danger, with words that would hearten two groups of activists in the post-9/11 world of added police powers - civil libertarians and the gun lobby.

I'd prefer quotes from Zapp Brannigan's "Big Book of War":

"In the game of chess you can never let your opponent see your pieces"

"If we can hit that bull's-eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards...Checkmate."

"Brannigan's law is like Brannigan's love, hard and fast"

I think Zapp Brannigan is far better at articulating the intricacies of successful warfare.

Thanks. I'll put that in the plus column then.

Any way we can send her an e-mail and see if she still has that pistol? That'd be cool...
