Couldn't have DD done the same thing when he was murdered?
I mean placed that same form of protection on Harry to carry him through when Lily's protection ceases on Harry's 17th birthday?
D'oh! Brilliant!
Clémence Poésy
Perhaps the protection only lasts as long as Harry is at Hogwarts? Student or staff?
I agree here, but we don't know what is happening to Draco now. He was unsuccessful. Draco can't hide his mind from LV, but Snape (if he is a good guy) surely can. Will the Malfoys end up being protected by the Order?
I wonder if the dementors are going to figure into Voldemort's soul splitting?
He did a great "Euro trash" part in Die Hard.
It apparently belonged to Snape's mother, who had been a student at Hogwarts, as well. Her last name was Prince.
So I see you're done... what do you guys think?
My family figured out the identity of the HBP within the chapter of his intro. Thought it was almost too obvious. Knew Dumbledore was going to die, too, but that was good. Am willing to bet on "R.A.B." being Regulus Black - hey, with a brother that cool, maybe he's not totally worthless.
On my re-read I concentrated on Snape... he's not working for Voldie. Dumbledore must have told him what he had to do. No way he's truly evil.
And sorry, Lupin and Tonks don't work for me. But otherwise a really great book.
I think the Harry-Ginny thing is cute too, and was amused during the whole book with Ron and Hermione. Some might object to all the lovey-dovey stuff, but hey, they are teenagers, and they've been through a lot together.
I don't know if you read earlier in the thread, but I don't think DD is dead. I don't think Snape put the hate into the Avada Kadavra, and thus didn't kill him, just stuned him long enough to make folks think he was dead. Remember Mad Eye Moody talking about the students collectively not being able to give him more than a nosebleed, and didn't Bellatrix make fun of Harry because he didn't have enough real hate in him to do the curse properly on her at the battle at the Ministry in OOTP?? I want to listen to OOTP again before I re-read HBP. We're taking the cassettes with us on the plane, and we'll have LOTS of hours to listen to it. The trip from Chicago to Tokyo is almost 13 hours!!
But would that be enough to fulfill the unbreakable vow he made with Narcissa? Draco's mission was to kill Dumbledore. I don't think faking it is enough.
But he dropped off the top of the tower... I'm sure he's dead. It would be such a cheat if he weren't. Very "Star Wars" or LotR.
Thought Ron and Hermione were cute. They've been cute since the first book. Harry/Ginny is ok.... See, I agree Remus needs someone to look after him but that's not Tonks. She can't take care of herself.
Please add me to the HP pinglist.
Thanks, Nully!
See you've found us! :o)
I can't believe that the wisest wizard in the world hatched a plan that starts: "First, you kill me."
She's going to have to pull something huge out of her hat to make me believe that Dumbledore's "sacrifice" was worth giving up his life for. I thought Sirius' death was way too easy and convenient and this one looks that way, too.
Dead is dead, or at least that's what we've been told, so I don't see how he isn't dead. I didn't see any clues as to any outs he would have to still be alive.
TS
Okay, I'm not a guy, but I really thought she'd be blonder, cute, and chestier. She's supposed to be so beautiful that men run into walls. And the costume seems to accentuate her, ah, slenderness (tactful word).
I loved Rickman in Galaxy Quest.....I loved that movie, too.
I thought Rickman was wonderful in "Quigley Down Under"; he had the right blend of arrogance, meanness, and even aw-shucks hero-worship to make him an intriguing villain. And gosh, he was so thin there in comparison to Snape!
Miranda Richardson is not the first thought I had to play Skeeter but I bet she'll be great in the role.
"He always hinted that he had an ironclad reason for trusting Snape," muttered Professor McGonagall...
Maybe Snape and DD did make an Unbreakable Vow, which again leads to the question: Who sealed the Vow? Or was veritaserum used to prove Snape's loyalty? That wouldn't actually be ironclad. Over the years, Snape's loyalty could have shifted, yet again. I'm leaning toward a Vow on this point. As for Rowling's assertion that "Eagle-eyed readers will find hints in the final pages," I found two late-in-the-book passages I thought were interesting:
"Somebody Stupefied a Death Eater on top of the tower after Dumbledore died. There were also two broomsticks up there. The Ministry can add two and two, Harry."--Rufus Scrimgeour
He's right about the two broomsticks. I do not trust vague words like "somebody," especially when used by someone who has an unknown agenda, as I think Scrimgeour has. And from a page or two earlier than that exchange:
It was important, Dumbledore said, to fight, and fight again, and keep fighting, for only then could evil be kept at bay, though never quite eradicated...
I hope this is a general statement and not an omen. I have enjoyed the series but when it ends, I want it to end. No killing off VM without having had destroyed ALL of the horcruxes.
