I had to leave early so we could go to the Support the Troops Rally.

It was mighty warm out. I think 103 .... too hot to be standing on a street corner. :)

Hi Snugs.

We had our monthly Support the Troops Rally tonight so I've been away all afternoon and just now got back online.

Thank you for the Scarecrow and Financial Freedom graphics.

Foolish Baggage

Read:
1 Corinthians 9:24-27

Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us. —Hebrews 12:1

Bible In One Year: Hosea 1-4

cover In 1845, the ill-fated Franklin Expedition sailed from England to find a passage across the Arctic Ocean.

The crew loaded their two sailing ships with a lot of things they didn't need: a 1,200-volume library, fine china, crystal goblets, and sterling silverware for each officer with his initials engraved on the handles. Amazingly, each ship took only a 12-day supply of coal for their auxiliary steam engines.

The ships became trapped in vast frozen plains of ice. After several months, Lord Franklin died. The men decided to trek to safety in small groups, but none of them survived.

One story is especially heartbreaking. Two officers pulled a large sled more than 65 miles across the treacherous ice. When rescuers found their bodies, they discovered that the sled was filled with table silver.

Those men contributed to their own demise by carrying what they didn't need. But don't we sometimes do the same? Don't we drag baggage through life that we don't need? Evil thoughts that hinder us. Bad habits that drag us down. Grudges that we won't let go.

Let's determine to "lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us" (Hebrews 12:1). —Dave Egner

The world has lost its transient lure—
Its evil spell I shun;
I've set my course for higher things
Till earth's brief race is run. —Bosch

That's too hot for me! But I'm sure I'll see temps in the triple digits in the near future.

The U.S. Army Air Corps was established July 2, 1926.
The Air Corps later became the U.S. Air Force.

Let’s Talk!

Come in and let your mind run free. We’ll talk of many things.
Of shoes, and ships, or cabbages, whatever discussion brings.
You’ll note we have a patriotic flair, we thank our men who serve,
And thank the ladies who are out there too. We marvel at their nerve.

Nature gets our attention too, both ours and that around,
We keep our eyes up to the skies, with both feet on the ground.
We like to stretch our Dreamworld, so it can hold the most,
But first let’s welcome all our guests, and Thank You to the host!

The Army Air Corps was the U.S. Army's aviation branch, to which belonged all flying units and all support units, such as aviation maintenance squadrons, which were aviation-oriented. Its branch badge was the winged propeller. The Army Air Forces consisted of the Army Air Corps plus units from other branches, e.g. Military Police, Coast Artillery (antiaircraft units), Transportation, Quartermaster, etc., that were necessary to support the tactical employment of air units. Thus, for example, the Eighth Air Force included a variety of non-Army Air Corps units. The Army Air Corps was a branch of service; the Army Air Forces was the combat organization.

Happy Birthday, US Army Air Corps!

The U.S. Army Air Corps (USAAC)
(The Wild Blue Yonder)
By Robert Crawford

Off we go into the wild blue yonder, Climbing high into the sun;
Here they come zooming to meet our thunder,
At 'em boys, give 'er the gun (give 'er the gun now!)
Down we dive sprouting our flame from under
Off with one helluva roar!
We live in fame or go down in flame, hey!
Nothing 'll stop the Army Air Corps!

Minds of men fashioned a crate of thunder,
Sent it high into the blue;
Hands of men blasted the world asunder;
How they lived god only knew!
Souls of men dreaming of skies to conquer
Gave us wings, ever to soar!
With scouts before and bombers galore, hey!
Nothing 'll stop the Army Air Corps!

Here's a toast to the host
Of those who love the vastness of the sky,
To a friend we will send a message of his brothermen who fly
We drink to those who gave their all of old,
Then down we roar to score the rainbow's pot of gold
A toast to the host of men we boast, the Army Air Corps!

Off we go into the wild sky yonder,
Keep the wings level and true.
If you'd live to be a grey-haired wonder
Keep the nose out of the blue!
Flying men guarding the nation's border,
We'll be there, followed by more!
In echelon we carry on, hey!
Nothing 'll stop the Army Air Corps!

Whenever I think about airplanes, the Air Force, and flying, I think of two people in particular.

One is the author of a very cute children's book, "The Little Prince", by Antoine De Saint-Exupéry. I have a copy of this, printed in 1943. Saint-Exupéry was a flier, and in the story, his plane went down in the desert and had mechanical problems. There he met the strangest little man, but you can read the story for yourself.

In real life, his plane went down in the Mediterranean for unknown reasons, and for a long time, he was simply missing.

A few years ago, a fisherman brought up on a line a bracelet belonging to Saint-Exupéry, thus providing a romantic closure to the mystery.

The other person of whom I think is John Gillespie Magee, Jr. You know him. He gave us this:

HIGH FLIGHT

Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds -- and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of -- wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long, delirious burning blue,
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew.
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

--John Gillespie Magee, Jr. (1922-1941)

His plane too was lost, though not in combat. Still an awesome tragedy, for what a wonderful ability he had to bring us with him on his flight.

Happy Birthday, Army Air Corps!

A fleeing Taliban, desperate for water, was plodding through the

Afghanistan desert when he saw something far off in the distance.

Hoping to find water, he walked toward the object, only to find a little

old

Jewish man sitting at a card table with neckties laid out on it.

>

The Arab said, "My thirst is killing me. Please, do you have water?"

The Jew replied, "I have no water. Would you like to buy a tie? They

are only $150. This one goes very nicely with your robes."

>

The Arab shouted, "Idiot! I do not need your overpriced tie. I need

water!"

>

"OK," said the old Jew, "it does not matter that you do not want to

buy a tie. I will show you that you have not offended me. If you walk over

that hill to the east for about four miles, you will find a lovely

restaurant.

Go! Walk that way! The restaurant has all the water you need!"

>

The Arab staggered away toward the hill and disappeared. Eight hours

later the Arab came crawling back to the Jewish man's table. The Jew said,

"I told you, the restaurant with the water is about four miles over that

hill. Could you not find it?"

>

"I found it," rasped the Arab. "But your brother wouldn't let me in

without a tie."

Good afternoon, Ms Dolly.

I promise to get to the Finest some time this weekend. I stopped by long enough to read your opening. Wonderful job.

I would hate to give my van to anyone with 6 kids. LOL With just Marissa, you should see the mess it is in most of the time.

We are going out to dinner later.

Have a nice evening.

The temp yesterday was too hot for me and I should be accustomed to this weather.

It should stay in the hi 90s or low 100s thru August. If we are lucky, our temps may cool to the low 90s for a couple of days.

Hope you are enjoying this long weekend while staying cool.

Good afternoon, NnB.

Thank you for sharing "High Flight" by John Gillespie Magee, Jr. It is a wonderful poem.

Do you have any special plans for celebrating our country's birthdate?

Whatever you do, stay cool.

Evening friends.

Hope everyone is having a great evening.

Speaking of the Air Force...

The chief of staff of the US Air Force decided that he would personally intervene in the recruiting crisis affecting all of our armed services. So, he directed that a nearby Air Force base be opened and that all eligible young men and women be invited. As he and his staff were standing near an brand new F-15 Fighter, a pair of twin brothers who looked like they had just stepped off a Marine Corps recruiting poster walked up to them.

The chief of staff walked up to them, stuck out his hand and introduced himself. He looked at the first young man and asked, "Son, what skills can you bring to the Air Force?"

The young man looks at him and says, "I'm a pilot!"

The general gets all excited, turns to his aide and says, "Get him in today, all the paper work done, everything, do it!" The aide hustles the young man off.

The general looks at the second young man and asked,"What skills to you bring to the Air Force?"

The young man says, "I chop wood!"

"Son," the general replies, "we don't need wood choppers in the Air Force, what do you know how to do?"

"I chop wood!"

"Young man," huffs the general, "you are not listening to me, we don't need wood choppers, this is the 20th century!"

"Well," the young man says, "you hired my brother!"

"Of course we did," says the general, "he's a pilot!"

The young man rolls his eyes and says, "Dang it, I have to chop it before he can pile it!"
