Memories at Stake
There was a time, before the water ran inside the house, we ran outside.
A house is but a wooden tent, you know. A place to shelter from the snow,
And rain, and colder days. Your house gives you a place to hide.
Until the water can be run inside, and then you have a place to go.
Our house was stark, like many others of its day,
With shingles from the rooftop to the ground.
But home it was to us, a place to learn and play,
And somehow, much more beautiful than mansions all around.
I see them clustered on the hillsides, like soldiers camping for the day,
Marching, ever marching, to a distant dawn of battle.
No longer sheltered by the forest, for the trees have gone away.
Are they the enemy? First yielding to our cattle,
And then to cornfields, and then once more,
Their bones erected oer their graves, no tombstone but the hearth,
Within the graveyard filled with casualties of our war,
We dance. We make our instruments from them, and our mirth.
What did they do to us to earn such spiteful torment?
We could not run to them for shelter from harsh air.
For in Winter, indifferent they stand, naked and quite dormant,
With only arms of supplication reaching up in silent prayer.

I was just on the other thread looking at that. Very nice. I have thought that about trees before also, but not as poetically as you did.

Happy Monday, MamaBear. Those baby jays are so cute!!!
We have a pair of Kildeer that made a nest in some gravel and rocks 10 feet from our drive.
There are 4 eggs in the nest. I will try to get a picture later.
The parents get really excited when we go out for the mail.
They are so funny when they try to distract us away from their nest.
Hope you are enjoying spring. :)

We don't have Macy's here anymore. I miss them. Some of our Jones Stores and many of our Penney's stores have closed.

Hee Haw was country music's answer to Rowan & Martin's
Laugh-In. Blackouts, nutty running gags, cameos, and some
of the worst "corny" one-liners imaginable, appropriately
delivered from a cornfield. An animated donkey was
used to react to the humor, and to provide the
"hee haw" of the title.

A HEE HAW CLASSIC DITTY
Where oh where are you tonight?
Why did you leave me here all alone?
I searched the world over and I thought I'd found true love.
But you met another and PTHHP! you was gone.
You took out your false teeth, your wig and your glasses.
You were just scattered all over the place.
I wanted to kiss you and hug you so tightly.
I guess that I would have if I'd found your face.
I went to your house at three in the morning.
You had all them curlers and junk in your hair.
You would not have scared me and I'd not have run so,
If you had not looked like you'd wrestled a bear.
I told you my darlin' you looked like a gopher.
Made you so mad, you haven't spoke since.
But tell me my darling if you ain't got buck teeth.
How do you eat apples through a picket fence?
When I picked you up for our date last weekend.
You looked so pretty in your satin and lace.
But when I bent over and started to kiss you,
you popped a pimple all over my face!

Aw, shucks!
Too much hidden talent stays hidden too long.
Open up, people! You have nothing to lose but your anonymity.

If your talent were a boxcar, then mine would be a BB rattling in it. So, no thanks. I'll enjoy your talent and stick with what I'm suited to do.
