Are most Science Fiction authors and fans liberals/leftists?
Posted on 01/31/2005 1:37:19 PM PST by EveningStar
I've been a science fiction fan for decades and it appears to me that the vast science fiction writers and fans are liberals/leftists. Am I imagining this?

Only the ones who dress like Stevie Nicks and read about cool dragons . . .

This fan isn't liberal. Also, Heinlein and Bradbury are libertarian/conservative I believe.

vast science fiction writers and fans = vast majority of science fiction writers and fans

Heinlein was probably libertarian. I would call Bradbury a moderate.

Not in my experience, but I don't know many of the authors. As far as fans are concerned, I thought we had to read in the closet?

Speaking of good sci fi, has anyone else been watching the new Battlestar Galactica? I hated the old series, but the new series is spectacular.

Most artist types are liberals, because they're all about feelings.

Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle are conservatives I believe....Lucifers Hammer, The Mote in God's Eye, among others.

Hard to say about authors... I'd guess probably no more so, and maybe even less, than authors from other fiction genres. Since distopian futures prevail in futuristic sci-fi, I'd have to say that there is a certain distrust of society and government that is hard to reconcile with modern liberalism.
As far as fans go, they're all over the board. There are plenty of sci-fi fans here at FR, and I'm sure an equally representative set over at DU.

Terry Gookind by his writing appears to be at least moderate or Libertarianish. He is defiantly Anticommunist.

I know about Niven and Pournelle. They're definitely not libs. :)

Isaac Azimov was a far-right conservative, as was Gene Roddenberry.
And Bobby Fischer has a love affair with Jews.

Funny how most of the alien societies in science fiction are either dictatorships or blissfull modens of socialism/communism.
Anyone ever read the "In the Balance" series by Harry Turtle Dove? Best sci-fi I ever read.

has anyone else been watching the new Battlestar Galactica? Yeah... so far, so good, though there's a lot more angst in the characters than I would like.
