13:11 Dozens sickened in downtown Washington D.C. office building

The Associated Press reports that officials say several dozen people have been sickened in a downtown office building. Washington, D.C., Fire and EMS spokesman Alan Etter said the incident is being treated as what he calls a "mass casualty" incident. Ambulances are lining up in the area around 1990 "I" Street, Northwest, and a triage area is being set up at nearby Murrow Park. There's no immediate word on what the problem is.

May only be a prank involving pepper spray -- affecting 50-100 -- with watery eyes.

"...using magnetization to stick the iron-loaded fullerenes to metal surfaces as a lubricant."

Not sure that the scale allows the "rustyballs" to be magnetized. You might have to magnetize the surface you want to lubricate.

If someone wants to pursue this as a back-yard hobby, I'd suggest trying to use welding rods and carbon-arc electrodes. Go for a dark, sooty product, and figure out how to separate the buckyballs. Or just market it as a superior lubricant until you can get better equipment.

Other areas for backyard inventors and researchers are in cold fusion, and nano-technology.

Don't worry that you can't afford the equipment -- nobody knows how to build it yet!! Your mind is the main tool you require.

Why are they called fullerless?

They were named after R. Buckminster Fuller, for the "geodesic dome" shape that they assume.

And also because they are too small for the Fuller Brush Salesman to get into their neighborhood.

Why didn't they name them Buckminsterenes.

At first one of the discoverers wanted to call it "footballene".

That wasn't his last name.

Fullerenes are a class of chemicals, of which the standard buckyball C60 is the simplest variety.

If you remember anything from high-school chemistry, it's that Organic chemistry is a whole lot more complicated. Fullerenes make it even more complicated -- and more fun.

Then there are the deadly poisonous variety ...

The "goodnightirenes"

Ahem...

That would work or "Tinysoccerballenes" would be catchy.

If I discover something can they be Guyrenes?

I hated chemistry. I made A's but the teacher was such a doofus that I lost interest in the subject.

"Groaaaan..."

Thanks!! I'll put that with my LOL collection!! Oh, and Guy, they already have that variety, but they're spelled differently, and they seem to exist in a semi-fluid state ... part liquid, and part dry area.

They're called "Gyrenes."

I want Guyrenes. They will behave erratically in a drunken state and yell at their neighbors.

Let's see ... we could cage an alcohol molecule inside one of the buckyballs.

Yeah, that would work. I wonder if we could hang a little sign on it, "In case of emergency, break atomic bonds."

Then we could blame them for "Brownian motion."
