Fearful that unrestrained development of artificial intelligence could lead to human extermination, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt) has introduced legislation that would establish a new federal Department of Artificial Intelligence (DAI). "Right now we face the total anarchy of the free market with regard to who will be permitted to develop this technology," the Senator complained. "We need government to step in and take control to ensure that this technology is properly managed."
"All the big AI firms agree that a public-private partnership along the lines of that between the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) and the pharmaceutical manufactures would be the optimal solution," Sanders continued. "The cooperation of the FDA and the industry was crucial in pulling the country out of the death spiral that could've occurred without the enactment of the steps needed to cure the COVID pandemic. As anyone who has seen 'The Terminator' movies knows, uncontrolled development of AI will kill most of humanity."
President Trump disagreed on this issue, saying "the notion that a federal bureaucracy could effectively manage the development of AI defies the historical failures of such an approach. First, a public-private partnership of the DAI and AI industry behemoths will stifle innovation just like the partnership of the FDA and big drug manufacturers did during the COVID crisis. The foolish restrictions, censorship of dissenting views, and the coercive threats against personal freedom that characterized the Biden Administration's approach to COVID would be repeated with AI."
"Then there is the problem of China's development of AI," Trump pointed out. "The partnership that Sanders envisions for restricting AI development in the US would not stop China from taking all the 'risks' that Sanders fears. As we already saw from the COVID experience, China went full speed ahead with the development of COVID as a bio-weapon, let it infect the whole world, and continuously lied about it. I know Sanders has admitted he is no genius, but it doesn't take a genius to recognize that his plan can't stop further development of AI, or as I call it 'super intelligence.' By leaving the development of this to the free market the US will retain its lead and be in a better position to counter the more malign intentions of hostile actors."
Sanders asserted "Trump has very little understanding of what this issue is about. There is no proof that China was at fault for COVID. China pointed to its 'wet markets' where infected bats were identified as the source of COVID. Every recognized expert agreed. Swante Scholz, a software engineer at Google, said 'the most likely outcome of improved AI is an existential catastrophe for humanity. A ban on super intelligence development would be a positive change for the foreseeable future.' I'm confident that we can rely on China to cooperate in an international plan to curb the development of AI in order to save humanity from the machines."

Absurd. An arcane technology field moving so fast it’s hard to define, and they think they can build a regulatory structure to monitor/manage/constrain it?
Who’s going to advise the government as to how this technology can be properly regulated?

That’s the problem. Bernie doesn’t think development of the leftist surveillance state apparatus is progressing fast enough.
Anyone who seriously listens to anything Sanders says on any topic gets measurably stupider.
Sanders is a grubbling ultracrepidarian. Safe to ignore.
I don't think I'm the only one who can see the problem with his "reasoning".
And leaving the issue of competency aside, the greater danger is how that regulation undoubtedly would become infected with political bias and agendas. AI that is require to lean hard left....
That's what Sanders really wants.

Once you’ve got it, it’s almost impossible to get rid of it.
