The right’s outrage over Elliot Page’s casting in ‘The Odyssey’ obscures Achilles’ own queerness

Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey is shaping up to be the biggest movie of the year, and right-wing voices are furious at it.

“Chris Nolan desecrated the Odyssey,” wrote Elon Musk on X. Musk, alongside hundreds of right-wing culture warriors algorithmically boosted on his platform, have spent the past few weeks fuming over the news that Kenyan-Mexican actress Lupita Nyong’o is playing Helen of Troy, and that transgender actor Elliot Page might be playing Achilles.

One right-wing influencer described the casting of Page as Achilles as “the final straw to ruin Homer.” Another pundit, in a post that received over 130,000 likes, asked how a “scrawny little female” could possibly play a character famed for his battle prowess. When looking at the countless viral social media posts lambasting the idea of Page as Achilles, one would never guess that Achilles is a fictional character, not a historical figure, and he only shows up in The Odyssey for one brief scene.

You’d also never guess from the outrage that Page hasn’t even been confirmed to play Achilles. Nolan and Universal Studios have stayed quiet about Page’s role, so all fans have to work with are a few seconds from the second official trailer for the film. The trailer shows Page’s character, covered in mud, telling Odysseus, “Who’s looking after your wife and son?”

Sounds like a box office bomb waiting to happen with settings from the insane left. Another film I have no interest in watching.

That said, on the question (which I never would have thought about) about Achilles being gay, the term "going Greek" provides those implications.

She’s about 5 feet tall and weighs about 100 pounds. She is not the most fearsome warrior in the whole world.

True sort of...he was written as a warrior leader of the Greeks, not some limp wristed, light in the sandals milksop. Tho he is barely in the Odyssey, he was a main guy in the Iliad.
Hell, as long as we are reinterpreting the story, why not just let the Trojans win...its just fiction, right?

Never heard of any of them, haven’t been to a movie in 25 plus years and never heard of LGBTWRSTUVWXYZ Nation let alone read it.

Most movies nowadays suck anyway and most are remakes of what used to be good movies.

Whip It with Ellen Page is a great little movie. It's about a girl who aspires to be a roller derby skater. Great cast. I highly recommend it.

Not a film I plan to pay for.

I might watch it once - on Basic Cable - were it might arrive immediately, after Final Cut.

If the Producers can actually finance it, and the Director can actually cast it, I guess it is none of my business.

Tho he is barely in the Odyssey, he was a main guy in the Iliad.

He spends most of the Iliad crying in his tent and is only there because Odysseus alone was able to recognize him when he dressed in women's clothing.

Could not finish reading the piece; quickly got repulsed by his continual use of the “right-wing” pejorative to bolster his narrative.

Achilles sexual preference cannot go beyond what Homer depicted. Any discussion after that is neurotic.

This is complete BS - but I’ll bother anyways. No Achilleus was not gay. Homer never depicted him as gay. Socrates, who was gay, portrayed him as such and those who were taught in his school and followed in that tradition portrayed him as gay, also, well after Homer.

Not saying I defend what happened, but the leaders of Athens sentenced Socrates to death because he was pushing homosexuality on the youth of Athens. That should provide all the context needed for how Greeks actually felt about homosexuality.

They’ll push this and how so many Greek heroes are supposedly gay today, because it’s suits their agenda today. Tomorrow they’ll talk about Socrates and historical persecution of homosexuals when that suits their agenda.

They talk out of both sides of their mouths because it’s always been about the agenda and never about facts and the truth.

the Mandalorian and Grogu just came out, it was predicted to be a smash Star Wars film— it is limping along with bad reviews. This Odyssey movie has no hype and so in this economy, I predict a complete flopola. They will lose money big time.

If we don’t like what they are trying to shove down our throats, the best way to fight it is to ignore it, and don’t support it in any way.
