Dear friends —
Today’s subscriber-only article marks a genuinely unexpected turn.
Speaking to the BBC, Broglio went further than anyone anticipated: he said Catholic service members could, in good conscience, refuse an order to invade a friendly nation.
What makes this moment extraordinary is not only the substance of Broglio’s warning, but the source. This is the same archbishop who until recently was reluctant to challenge Trump-era policies at all.
Yet in just a few months, he has now issued three public rebukes of the administration — on religious freedom, on extrajudicial violence, and now on the prospect of unjust war.
Why the shift? And why now? You’ll find out in the second half of this article.
This isn’t about Greenland alone. It’s about whether moral law still places limits on presidential power — and whether the Church is prepared to defend those limits even when it’s uncomfortable.
Thanks to your support, Letters from Leo can track these moments as they happen and explain why they matter.

It’s nice to know Catholics can’t be counted upon.
Sad but true.
On religious freedom? The President does more for religious freedom that the Vatican! And, I am Catholic!
“It’s nice to know Catholics can’t be counted upon.”
That’s not true! And you best hope it isn’t true. Catholics make up about 1/6th of the world population.
Guess what Catholics?
It works both ways. You can also ignore woke, homosexual Bishops when they wander into the secular swamp of politics.

If you don’t care that another Freeper got there first, continue to ignore the search function (which still works swell, by the way).
Has the Archbishop ever issued an edict on religious freedom in China?
Too bad ol’ Broglio wasn’t around to advise Catholics during the time of Pope Julius II.
I have never heard of this Archbishop before, but he does not have any jurisdiction over China...
Trump would never invade Grrenland. Not going to happen. When China or Russia take you over, do not come running to us to save you.
Do you have any idea how small that population of Bishops is compared to the total...replace Catholic with any Protestant denomination and you’ll find they are several times higher. However, keep perspective...there is nothing satan likes more that to influence priests, then Protestant ministers. They carry a big load of risk.
Does he have any "jurisdiction" over the USA?
What about “moral” orders, Counselor?
He is the Archbishop over the US military evidently. So, he advises Catholic military personnel. I think he is probably spot on on the single dimensional plane but he does not consider the broader issue regarding what he has said. He has done damage to the Catholic military individuals and to our country.
Uh, no— they CAN NOT! Not under UCMJ. Legal orders. There is no argument this prelate can make without sounding like Fr. Pfleuegerl, and other reds, like the ones who helped Ortega. Where are they now? Hmmm?
So he doesn’t think the troops are smart enough to decide not to follow “immoral” orders on their own?
What “immoral” order is he referring to?
Rhetorical questions intended for Archbishop Karen, not you.
I’m genuinely surprised that there’s still a Catholic military archbishop in the U.S. these days. I would have expected Catholic leaders to discourage their followers from joining the U.S. military a long time ago.
And just who do the troops turn to as an authority on whether an order is unlawful - a Democrat such as Chuck Shummer? CNN? the church?
And we already have a conscientious objection provision means for discharge.
This bishop is stupid enough to be a news anchor at CNN.
