Denmark and Greenland are seeking a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio after the Trump administration doubled down on its intention to take over the strategic Arctic island, a self-governing Danish territory.
Tensions escalated after the White House said Tuesday that the “U.S. military is always an option,” even as a series of European leaders rejected President Donald Trump’s renewed demands and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that a U.S. takeover would amount to the end of the NATO military alliance. Trump has floated since his first term the idea of acquiring the world’s largest island to ensure U.S. security in the Arctic.

They’re going to begin negotiating the terms of the transfer.
Greenland’s total population is about 1/2 a million people, about the average of a mid size American city. The Danish army and navy hardly strike fear in the hearts of anyone. They’re looking for the best deal they can get because they know this president don’t play.
Hey Marco....
Bring lawyers, guns and money.
Greenland has about 55,000 permanent residents. I suggest a non-binding plebiscite to allow those residents vote on the matter. It would provide a useful starting point for any discussions. If a significant portion of Greenlanders want to become US citizens maybe Denmark might have less of an objection.
I see a status for Greenland similar to Puerto Rico or Guam.
Closer to 10% of that, 55,000-57,000 at last census
Not even close...about 57,000 people...just a tad bigger than my little town.
That would give the Danes all the benefits of citizens.
Ha, ha, ha. Is that supposed to be a threat? Remember what the Polish leader said about NATO: "We have 500 million Europeans expecting 350 million Americans to protect us from 160 million Russians".
Whoops...Greenlanders are not called Danes.
What Trump is doing about Greenland really made no sense to me at all until it hit me — We’d lose strategic access if Denmark lost a war with Russia.

“self-governing Danish territory”
I thought the Danes were opposed to colonialism.
Lol.
No, they're not. They're going to ask why Trump is being such a j*ck*ss about it. Trump's blustering has turned what perhaps could have been a purchase into an issue of national pride/respect on the part of Denmark and Greenland.
They'll surely point out that the U.S. already has very favorable rights in Greenland in terms of being able to establish new bases, provide security over Greenland and the surrounding ocean, etc., pursuant to a rather open-ended Agreement between the U.S. and Denmark signed way back in 1951 that is still in effect. So whatever valid security concerns we may have are already covered. Here's the text of the Agreement:

The irony is that Agreement is expressly linked to NATO:
(2) This Agreement, being in implementation of the North Atlantic Treaty, shall remain in effect for the duration of the North Atlantic Treaty.
The part that is really offensive is us talking about Greenland's mineral wealth. That simply does not belong to us, and we have no right to simply take it from a sovereign nation -- much less one with which we have been formally allied for the last 75 years.
Does that include Baby Seal Clubbing?.............Asking for a friend.............
No reason to talk to Denmark.
