A white Democratic governor issues an obviously illegal order. A white Democratic Secretary of State issues a patently inaccurate, and wholly unauthorized, “legal opinion.” And Democratic legislators agree to boycott a legislative session en masse, all in a desperate attempt to prevent the first black Speaker of the House in their state’s history from taking office.
We’ve seen this story before. It’s Mississippi in the 1960s, right? No, actually: it’s Minnesota in 2025.
Scott and I have written about the Minnesota Democrats’ illegal power grab–really, an attempted coup–in which they hope to take control over the Minnesota House of Representatives, despite being in the minority. But one thing we haven’t mentioned is that the Speaker whom they are feverishly trying to bar from taking office, Lisa Demuth, is black.
No doubt most Minnesotans are unaware of that fact. Lisa has never made a point of her race, has never suggested that anyone should vote for her on account of her skin color. Based on my acquaintance, I doubt that the thought has ever occurred to her. She is going to be the next Speaker of the House–the Democrats’ machinations are going to fail–not because she is black, but because she has earned the trust and confidence of her colleagues.
Still, if it were a female Democrat who was going to be her state’s first black Speaker, and Republicans who were taking absurd legal positions and boycotting a legislative session to prevent her from taking office…well, never mind. That would never happen.

I hope he's right!
As soon as I realized this I'm thinking..."oh,boy....there's gonna be trouble".
To my surprise there wasn't a lick of trouble...from the white guys or the black guys. I've wondered if my experience was symbolic of some basic truth about the South back then.
Sounds insurrectiony to me.
BTW, I lived in Mississippi in 1963................
“I’ve wondered if my experience was symbolic of some basic truth about the South back then.”
It was symbolic. Huge negative stereotype of the South created by diabolical northern democrats and media. I was stationed in Mississippi in 63-64 and there was racial harmony near as I could tell. Far more cordiality than I knew from the north. However, the “civil rights” movement was just going full tilt. Outside (ie northern leftists) agitators were stirring up animosity all over the South where there was tranquility resulting in some excesses and wildly publicized killings. There were times I felt uneasy with my illannoy license plates. Never had a problem though.
One of the reasons is, Southerners grew up around African-Americans and were often from the same socioeconomic backgrounds (families poor and struggling to make ends meet). They often mingled in day-to-day life, even if it was maids or dayworkers. In the Midwest and Northeast, African-Americans never really had day-to-day contact with whites, and there was friction between the groups.
He was shocked that blacks and whites got along so well together down here. When the first black football player at Meridian High went into the game for the first time in 1967 (Robert Bell), there was a standing ovation from the crowd.
Were there problems? Heck yes! Most of the crap pulled was at night when everybody else was trying to sleep.
OK.
Well she’s black same way Kamala was black.
Just an observation.
Gosh, it's almost as if the Demwits only care about Party Loyalty and everything else is just a line of *******t.
