A man set himself on fire during an anti-Israel rally in front of the White House on Saturday evening, video shows.
The man was identified as Samuel Mena Jr. a former journalist from Phoenix, Arizona, according to 12 News. He was later hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The incident occurred just days ahead of the one-year anniversary of the Hamas mass murder of Israeli civilians that triggered the current war in Gaza.
Footage circulating on social media showed the incident in which Mena screams in agony as his left arm burns. Bystanders and Metropolitan police officers worked together to douse the flames and provide aid to the protester.
“We spread the misinformation,” Mena can be heard screaming in the video. “I’m a journalist and I said it was okay!”
Mena reportedly posted an essay on his website explaining his motives for engaging in this type of protest. In the post, Mena criticized the media for lacking objectivity on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. “And NOW, Israel marches on Lebanon, and western media calls it a ‘Limited ground operation,’ while failing to mention Israels [sic] activity bombing Syria, and Yemen as well,” he wrote.
He ended the post by explaining why he planned to set his left arm on fire. “To the 10 thousand children in Gaza that have lost a limb in this conflict, I give my left arm to you. I pray my voice was able to raise up yours, and that your smiles never disappear,” he wrote.
Mena is a graduate of Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication and had previously worked as a news photographer at Arizona’a Fammily (KPHO/KTVK) for about two years, according to his website.
Anti-Israel protesters have been staging similar demonstrations across the country, especially on college campuses, since the start of the war.
Flaming idiot....
Moron.
Hope it catches on. Clean up these nazi campus protesters
<< “We spread the misinformation,” Mena can be heard screaming in the video. >>
Well he’s right about that, but not in the sense he thinks.
If more of them would do that there would be fewer protests.
The guys toast.
Infernsurection.
He made and ash of himself...............
>>He was later hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries
Pity.
It seems to me he was not fully emersed in his protest.
Maybe he’ll start a trend.
I’d contribute the gasoline but unfortunately I donated my extra gas to the victims of Western NC!
Maybe setting oneself on fire helps a "journalist" to tell the truth.
Next week, he’ll find another cause but he’ll always with a messed up arm.
One down, many more to go.
Maybe it’ll catch on.................
you're right, he's an idiot, can't even work a match and gasoline.
Hey Buddy, Got a light ?
