WASHINGTON — Sheila Jackson Lee, a Houston Democrat who was one of the longest serving members of Texas’ Congressional delegation and a longtime advocate for progressive causes, died on Friday amid her battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 74.
Jackson Lee began her congressional career as an underdog, defeating four-term U.S. Rep. Craig Washingtonin the 1994 Democratic primary, before establishing herself as a fixture in Congress and Houston with ties to the highest reaches of the Democratic Party.
Jackson Lee was a progressive fixture on Capitol Hill for decades. She was an early opponent of the Iraq War and advocate for gay rights. In 2021, Jackson Lee was arrested for engaging in civil disobedience over a federal voting rights bill. By the time of her death, she was a senior member of the House Judiciary, Homeland Security and Budget committees. She never shied from speaking on the House floor or before the cameras on causes she cared about.
She was also a household name in the 18th Congressional District, which includes Downtown Houston. She was known for her frequent visibility at constituent graduations, funerals and baby showers.

Wasn’t she the one always wearing some goofy hat?
Momma always said...
Pancreatic cancer can take someone in as little as a week, that happened to a friend.
Although I didn’t think too highly of her nor her politics, she was a child of God. May she RIP.
Sad to hear. I was just watching some of the older Paul Harrell videos, before the ravages of this disease became apparent.
In the efforts here and in the BN thread to “be nice” there is no, zero reason to be so, except ingratiation to ones self (if anyone needs that, there is the Lord to ask).
So- let’s recall who she was, for real for-ever. Start with the “it’s my seat inside the bulkhead- and I ain’t movin- do you know who I am?” the original airliner “karen”.
And never forget her handing an envelope of Cash (100’s) to the lead lawyer for Christine Blasey Ford the hippy surfer psychologist with the see eye eh father, who couldn’t remember when she was raped at a party- but definitely it was Justice Kavanaugh. Never forget live action hand pass— photos everywhere and video. As suttle as a Houton Ghetto-potamus.
So- WHO will replace her— and win in the election she had coming up— don’t allow her fill in or one of her “girls”. Send in MAGA on steroids.
Pure virtue signaling.
What? Why isn’t that breaking news?
A “FIXTURE” in congress is now something to be praised for……..SPIT!! This utterly STUPID woman was a YALE graduate who thought we planted the American flag on Mars!! Dumb as a rock YET received a YALE degree!!
I wonder if she was allowed to visit the flag planted by astronauts on Mars on her way out of the solar system?
If I recall the testimony correctly, she never said she was raped she said Kavanaugh laid on top of her when they both had clothes on and she felt threatened or vulnerable. Not that I believe any of that either.
What happens to her seat? Special election before Nov or do the Dems select someone to run in her place. Obviously the seat stays vacant until an election.
I remember many of her straight-faced gaffes. With her passing, possibly we will no more hear things about US flags on Mars, standing as a free slave,.
RIP
Please, once is quite enough.
If Donald Trump had died the left would be cheering...not going to say anything about SJL’s passing...
RIP....pass the mashed potatos please.
For house races this close to the election they will simply revert to this election. I am sure there are already declared candidates. I imagine the democrats will “assign” someone to run in her place.
I know in our state if you are more than 90 days out, there is a special election. We are pretty close to that. Running, voting, and then doing it again in a month seems kind of stupid.
I am sure the staff has been running the office for months already; constituent services will move along as it always does.
suttle= subtle.
In a pun way— she was a sutler. Suttle.
If Sylvester Turner wants the seat, he will be elected.
I myself am gobsmacked.
