When I was a kid I bucked hay back when they used to feed the hay crew. This one was owned by a Portuguese couple. It was one of the best meals in the valley. It wasn’t strictly Portuguese fair but it was all great.

“Not exactly like Italian or Spanish or French
More like English....blandish”

I am so glad I have New Orleans French ancestry from my mother’s people... gumbo is the food of the gods...

An anecdote from the UN Bosnian peacekeeping. The American and French units had great food either air cargoed in or bought locally but they tried to find an Italian unit guy to cook it like his mother or grandmother did
For the record OG is OK but just barely
I’m a big TexMex guy myself for the record
Something of a tamale expert.

I go for their Roscato wine, more than their food.

Unlimited soup & salad & bread sticks are a good value. I just take the main course home. And I love their Roscato wine. I am not even a wine drinker. It is the only wine I like.

All of the Olive Gardens here in S.E. Michigan are now owned by the Lebanese

And if you want to find them, just take the Bay Route.

Now, Lebanese food by Lebanese, that's another story. There's a place in the Dr. Phillips section of Orlando called Cedars, just far enough away from I-drive that the tourists never find it, and its food is to die for, from the site-made hummus to the kibbeh bi laban.

And no Lebanon bologna there either, that's a different Lebanon...

“It’s just strange that Italy would have such a wide variety of food dishes...”

Because we can cook?

My wife and I stopped for lunch at an O.G. in Maryland last week. I admit to being an unsophisticated clod when it comes to culinary excellence. I just know what I like. And I like OG’s “Zuppa Toscana”. They have a “Never Ending Soup” luncheon Special, which I ordered, and enjoyed very much. Luv that Zuppa Toscana!

I recommend visiting Italy at least once or twice in your lifetime. It’s worth it. Plus, generally everyone in Sicily loves Trump. The mayor of the city in my ancestral home has a picture of Trump in his office XD

I knew an Italian woman once who would sometimes cook me meals back in my bachelor days. From the simplist ingredients, often no more than garlic, red peppers, pasta, and olive oil, she would cook the most delicious dinners. I’ve never tasted Italian cooking anywhere as good she could make. I watched her carefully, but I could never come close to to what she did. It must have been a precise understanding of time and temperature which she grew up learning back in Italy.

Max: Have you tried Colombo’s Italian Steak House and Jazz Club in Eagle Rock?

I hear ads for it on the radio, thought I might try it.

Meh. 99% of Italian restaurants in the US are horrible. I can count on one hand the ones in NJ and NY I actually enjoy going to. Prefer cooking anything Italian at home.

In the tri-state area, you have better luck finding a good meal at a Greek, Lebanese or Korean restaurant on a lark then most eye-tie places these days.

Blame it on the Phoenicians. Did they ever bother to visit Ireland?

My Italian cooking is limited to only a few dishes, but any one of them is 10 times better than anything I’ve ever eaten at Olive Garden. Unfortunately, most people around my part of the country don’t know the difference between Olive Garden and the real thing, so it’s often a choice for Christmas parties or other special occasions. If I have to go, I just grin and bear it.

This American household is eating leftovers tonight. I just had two slices of from scratch pizza with leftover taco flavored ground meat and Mr. b finished up the sweet and sour pork thrown together from other leftovers. Real Italian and Asians cooks weren’t invited.
