Bible Verse Melted To Steel In 9/11 Attacks Sends A Fascinating Message To America

When the chief of staff Andrew Card knelt down and told George Bush “America is under attack” 15 years ago Sunday, the words he whispered in the president’s ear in a Florida classroom launched what was supposed to be a planned, orderly response to a national emergency. But what followed instead was chaos, a breakdown in communication and protocol that risked international conflict and could have made Sept. 11, 2001, a still bigger tragedy. There were live nukes on the tarmac at U.S. air bases, a failed communications system, and a security protocol for the president and his potential successors — the “continuity of government” plan — that only one top official followed.

But we are America and we trust God’s plan and it seems he trust us because in all that chaos and pain God has sent us a message through a small piece of steel!

“Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.”

So many chapters. So many verses. But these were the words — from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, in the Gospel of Matthew — found permanently exposed at Ground Zero after the Sept. 11 attacks. The pages of the Bible in which they were printed had fused to a chunk of steel as the World Trade Center collapsed, to be found only months later.

A firefighter found the fragment in March 2002, under the Tully Road, a temporary truck route that covered the last remnants of the south tower. He called out to the photographer, who happened to be nearby.

“This shredded, burned and rubble-covered Bible came to me from the loving hands of a fireman who knew that I was the record keeper of ground zero,” Mr. Meyerowitz said Thursday in an e-mail from Italy, where he now lives. Mr. Meyerowitz went on to say, “My astonishment at seeing the page that the Bible was open to made me realize that the Bible’s message survives throughout time, and in every era we interpret its teaching freshly, as the occasion demands.”

The Bible was also recently paid a visit by the Pope. This is truly an amazing story, and while I don’t think the idea of retaliation in this context is speaking of defending the country from terrorist attacks, it’s a poignant message none the less. It’s easy to forget, even as a Christian, that we’re all sinners in need of the saving grace of Jesus. That includes radical terrorists, murderers, adulterers, thieves, and so on. None of us are better than anyone else.

Before the eyes of God we truly are all equal, regardless of race, ethnicity, political beliefs, and so on, because we’ve all offended a holy, righteous God with our sinfulness. Thankfully, God sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross so those who repent and trust in Him could be saved, no matter how bad they might think they are. This miracle, this page of Scripture, is a reminder that while we should most definitely take action to defend ourselves from attack, we do not have to allow our hearts and minds to be held captive by hate, regardless of how badly others may hurt us.

In our current culture, which seems to be obsessed with death, these are much-needed words of hope.

Snopes has the following comment about this discovery: In short, it’s neither impossible nor implausible that Meyerowitz did document a “heart-shaped Bible [page] fused to a steel beam” found in the WTC rubble after 9/11 and given to him by a firefighter. However, we haven’t yet found any mention of that story appearing prior to 2013 or 2014, despite the fact that his body of work is strongly associated with the aftermath of 9/11. And as far as we know, the firefighter from whom Meyerowitz received the relic has never been identified, nor has he stepped forward to corroborate the discovery.

Nope.

I saw the picture. It answered my question: Only one verse was preserved?

And the answer is, "no".

There is no reason to believe this story, nice though it sounds. I don't do Facebook much, but when I do, I'm really disappointed in so much of the nonsense my friends just soak up because it's "Christian".

Generally speaking, people are pretty gullible if they trust the source and don't put a lot of thought into a thing. This one was easy for me because I knew who it was immediately, and when people to post "pictures" of Jesus, I always say, "That looks more like Jerry Garcia to me."

Regarding this story, it looks like a whole page was "frozen" and a lot of Jesus sermon was preserved. No need to single out a single one unless you have an agenda.

People get all superstitious about WTC Bible and miss the fact it’s actually evidence of DEW... the metal deformed and “melted” but the paper was completely un-burned / unscathed.

I think they have it proudly displayed in the September 11 museum for this reason, but covertly, under the guise of “isn’t it amazing the Holy Book survived!”... when really it is evidence of their “greatness” i.e. “look how we can manipulate matter! Fear us!”

Back in the day I thought of a different verse: “Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”

There were people who knew the Lord when our towers fell. They did not perish even if they died.

But in the 19 years since rather than repentance we have seen a fruit that can be judged, the championing of homosexuality, appearing everywhere in our society which should let us know that people have been accelerating their refusal to retain the knowledge of the Lord.

9/11 was not some great judgement on America ... it was just the then latest act of war in Islam’s war against the whole of humanity in the last 14 centuries of naked aggression ... but the culture war from the Left though is only succeeding because a different sort of judgment is arguably already taking place.

Setting aside the question of plausibility, the verse is solid and one I think most Christians have pondered. This Christian understands it to mean that we should control our desire to lash out and do harm against those who offend us so that we might take pleasure in their suffering. On board with that. I do not think it means that if a maniac breaks into our home and begins killing our family that we should not neutralize that evil immediately and completely. Acquaintances at the time (who were suddenly biblical scholars) also bleated the refrain to “turn the other cheek”, and not seek “retribution”. I pointed out to them that retribution should not be our goal; our goal should be to forever eliminate the source of that horrifying evil, and thereby prevent it from ever harming our people ever again. This, I pointed out, would be a counter-attack, and not a temper tantrum. Some got it. Most did not. Jesus was not a wuss.

There are a lot of baloney memes that Christians believe without looking into their veracity because they have a nice message or one they agree with.

That’s why I like the Jerry Garcia line. Just because a cloud or a piece of toast has a pattern that looks like a guy in a beard, it doesn’t mean it looks like Jesus or anything remotely like that. It just looks like a guy in a beard. And other times it looks like a horsey or a puppy, or a ‘57 Chevy. :)

And adhering to such nonsense makes people look, well, stupid and, for lack of a better word, “slow”. That is, it severely damages their testimony.

That being said, I’ve experienced three bonafide miracles, two of them healings, and my wife actually heard God speak directly to her (just before her first husband died). There are REAL miracles. We don’t need to see them in every cloud, piece of toast, or facebook meme.
