Before getting to the meat of this story, I should probably start with a bit of disclosure. When I was younger, I used to play Dungeons and Dragons. I mean… I played it a lot. Probably obsessively. It started when I was in the Navy, but carried on well into my thirties. That fact is probably what later led me to become somewhat addicted to the online roleplaying game Everquest. So yes… I was one of those nerds.

Paul Harvey and others used to warn about D&D being somehow inspired by Satanism. I wasn’t allowed to play it in my house. I wasn’t all that into such games anyway.

Pretty much all monster races are playable as Player Characters now.

When goblins and orcs are cannon fodder for the players it makes sense that they all have the same alignment. When players are using characters of these races, it doesn’t make sense to make them role play evil.

Skeletons, ghouls and other undead as well as demons still give plenty of inherently evil monsters to fight and overcome.

Well, there go Peter Jackson’s Orcs, Goblins, and Urukhai too. To make matters worse to the imbeciles who rave about such, the grossly evil but clearly intelligent leader of Sauron’s legions in “Return of the King” was a white skinned Charles Laughton as Quasimodo lookalike. Clever enough to avoid a big rock, anyway.
