Methinks he wore the mask as a way to encourage the "protesters" to wear theirs so that they are not able to be identified that easily when they are caught on camera.
But that's just me being silly because I listen to too many tinfoil hat conspiracy theorists on YouTube, I guess. That's what my friends and family tell me.

Byron Brown is black and has been in office for 15 years. He’s the sort of permanent, Democrat place-holder politician that is so common in New York State. I suppose he doesn’t feel it necessary to pander and grovel before the 40% of his city that is also black.
They’ve started invading the eastern suburbs.
The end result doesn’t depend on whether the mayor wears a mask or not.

I’ve known him for 15 years. He was pissed off, well for him anyway.
He’s usually very scripted and slow speaking. Not a bad guy but every time I see him
he asks me where my wife is immediately after we say hi.

That said, I fail to see how the arsonist could possibly be identified in that dark, fuzzy video. Hizzoner’s statement is politically expediency, nothing more.
