The idea behind fast food is speed and efficiency. When it comes to fast-food chains, McDonalds is always on the cutting edge of getting people fed quicklytoo quickly, some say.
In the rush to gobble down food, much of the joy of eating is lost. Fast food is a soulless commodity that neglects the spiritual appreciation of flavor and taste. It can turn what should be a dining place into a biological fueling station.
The bad news is that it has just gotten worse.
Just when you think the fast-food giant has reached a peak of efficiency, it comes out with something that challenges the existing order of things. These changes supposedly adapt to new consumer demand for speed and efficiency.
The next new thing is called McDonalds to Go. It has just opened several locations in England including one on the fashionable Fleet Street in the heart of London. It will presumably roll out to other places if it proves popular.
The new format strips the bare bones down to the barest bones. No humans are allowed to take the orders of hungry consumers upon entering. Technology dominates everything as interaction with machines is the rule. Promoters call it the best thing since the drive-thru was introduced in the seventies.
What you wont see at the new McDonalds to Go are any dining facilities. The new format is exclusively take-out. There are no tables, chairs or any decoration at the locations. The walls are gray and expressionless to get the customer in and out as quickly as possible. Even the storefront outside is bare with minimal signage beyond some small yet familiar golden arches.

Hamburger assembly machines will be next. Customer orders will be auto packed. The robot machinery will be assembled in third world companies by cheap labor.
I haven’t eaten in a McDonalds in over 20 years..........or more...............
“LOL! weve had vending machines since the dark ages!”
Yes. And if vending machines could spit out fresh hot Mcdee’s there’d be one in every office, warehouse, etc.
I have no problem with this. If people want it,they will go,if they don’t want it,they won’t do business there.
I wouldn’t enter one,but I refuse to pump my own gas either.Different strokes-———!
Everything old is new again...................
And they actually “Habla Inglés”
They put the Automats out of business, now they are becoming Automats...............
Perfect! I don’t stop there for chat or works of art. Just like the self-checkouts at Walmart, in and out in the shortest time is what I want.
Very interesting, thanks.
“I will miss the brawls on Youtube.”
You won’t miss anything. At first the machinery will be exposed and completely vulnerable to being beat upon by aggrieved “customers”. Only after some time will the machinery itself be encased in bullet proof Plexiglas, just like the counter of every inner city store in a “disadvantaged community of color” today.
“Yes. And if vending machines could spit out fresh hot Mcdees thered be one in every office, warehouse, etc.”
Went to get my car serviced. Took five minutes ti go through all the options on the coffee machine!
“Just like the self-checkouts at Walmart, in and out in the shortest time is what I want.”
Our Walmart just. reconfigured. Took out most of the cash registers. At least 50 self-service. At. least the now have hand-held scanners.
LOL!
Great format for travellers who just want to get off the road for a bit and grab a bite. Where do they take out to?
This is what minimum-wage laws do.
So? This is exactly how McDonald's were in the 60's. Maybe they are returning to a tried and true model.
I reject the premise of the entire article.
The main reason I avoid McDonalds is due to lack of speed - consistent at every McDs I visit.
Back in the day, I worked at a Wendys. We had 60 seconds to have an order ready from drive-thru. 45 seconds inside during lunch rush.
Compare that to today.
Consequences . . . .
