Natural Health

Many FReepers have knowledge to share about improving and maintaining health and would like to share it and learn from others; and others may not know much yet but want to learn. Some of us don't have much money for good insurance or doctors, some want to try other methods besides prescription meds, and some have experience in treating and solving health problems.

More and more "regular" doctors have accepted treatment methods such as the benefits of acupuncture, massage for many conditions, better diet, use of herbs and so on. There are limits, and often side effects, to some standard medical efforts.

My field is Ayurvedic herbalism and related measures, and have a lot of information I can post when I have time. I have seen herbs and sometimes dietary changes help people (including myself) with issues such as rheumatoid arthritis, high BP, gallstones, kidneystones, repeated boils, UTIs, prostate problems, insomnia, allergies, urinary incontinence, and many more. I hope to learn a lot from others with their knowledge and experience.

There are many "old fashioned" home care methods that were in common use a few generations ago that actually work and are cheap, such as castor oil packs, fomentations using alternating hot and cold water, and the like, which are easy to do. I am sure there is a lot of knowledge here on Free Republic that can be shared.

I would like this thread to stay civil without distruption, so my request is that people who think natural health methods are bunkum, make your own thread.

TREATING BURNS

I am used to small burns as I’ve worked as a cook, cooked many many times for large-ish groups of people, and always cooked from scratch. Usually I just tolerate and go on with my business.

Then I learned more and more about natural healing methods.

More than 20 years ago I was cooking for a group of friends who were coming over and grabbed the handle of the iron frying pan without a potholder. Forgot...

A burn the size of a quarter appeared and while not very big, the pain was almost intolerable. I had read about Lavender essential oil healing burns, so I applied some. As the oil went across the burn, I could see its progress, the pain disappeared. I was quite amazed.

In some minutes the pain came back, so I took a small piece of absorbent cotton cloth, soaked it in Lavender, and taped it on. No more noticeable pain.

The next morning there was a very faint, almost unnoticeable pale pinkish spot where the burn had been. I had never seen a burn heal that fast, with no blistering, open weeping sore type thing.

Later I’ll tell an even more amazing burn story, with a much worse burn.

Hat tip to Larry et al, he pinged me to the article below. Discuss! I may add a bit or two on this thread and maybe copy to the other thread. Interesting topic, one size does NOT fill all in the fasting arena, but some kind may help most people. There are many kinds of fasting and some are heroic and few people can (or should) do it - like water for a month. Some are easier on the system and more accessible and in the long run, works just as well or better.

Then there are temporary mono-diets - not fasting entirely, but eating only one thing for a day or more days, that can also be very detoxifying but easier. People with blood sugar problems should of cousre never do juice or water fasts. (IMHO).

Now I’ll look for the other ping someone kindly sent me about Alzheimers, trying to find it. And later, the second Burn Story.

Hat tip to sweetiepiezer who pinged me to this thread. It was all of 2 whole days ago so I couldn’t find it on my ping page.... Very interesting dicussion about bad germs and teeth and Alzheimers.

I remember reading about the Evil Spirochetes on FR a few years ago. I usually brush with baking soda anyway, or Ayurvedic or home made tooth powder, as I cannot stand gooey toothpastes. A few dentists ago they did a test for bacteria count in my mouth and they couldn’t believe the low bacteria count. Maybe the b.soda and tooth powder. According to Ayurveda tooth powder is much better than paste, and should have nothing sweet in it; rather it should have herb powders that are hot, astringent and bitter, as these tighten the gums and are anti-bacterial. These tooth powders are powdered clay based, and now I make my own as it is cheaper. If this saves me from losing my wits, so much the better!

Check out the discussion here, may be useful:

Pinging the list to a couple of burn stories, and also links to information about fasting and the connection between Alzheimers and spirochetes. If people want to discuss those topics on this thread it wouldn’t hurt. Or on the other threads, either way is fine. Fasting is an interesting topic and I might post some info on this thread as I will get spread too thin trying to post on too many threads.

First burn story and links up above.

BURN STORY NUMBER TWO.

A number of years ago I was taking a large pot, maybe 3 gallons, full to the brim of hoiling water off the wood stove. It spilled over the top of my left hand. This water was highly boiling. It was the middle of the night, and I knew it was the worst burn I’d ever had. It didn’t hurt at first but I knew it would shortly.

When the pain hit, it hit like no other pain I’ve had, and I’ve had a lot of pain. This is what I did:

1. Immersed the hand in a bowl of very cold water. That took the pain away instantly. As soon as the water warmed up just a little, the pain slammed again, so I would replace with more cold water. Luckily it was winter so the water was very cold (well water).

2. I did that for a long time, maybe an hour or two, I wasn’t paying attention to the clock. As soon as I pulled the hand out of the water, the pain hit and it was basically unbearable. After some time, the pain lessened enough so I could go on to the next step.

3. I then sprinkled Lavender essential oil on it and the pain was very reduced. In a short while (ten minutes maybe?) pain slammed back, so kept dropping Lavender oil on in for some time. I had very little Lavender oil but very thankful I had some.

4. After a long time, I figured I had to get some sleep, so put another few drops of Lavender, and then packed the entire back of the hand with wet clay, of which I always have a bowl on hand. Probably about 3/4 of an inch deep. That removed any residual pain. I wrapped the whole thing up in a plastic bag and taped with masking tape, and managed to go to sleep.

5. I woke up in the morning, unwrapped my hand, and I surprised to find the burn completely gone, with only on small area, maybe the size of a dime, slightly pinkish and very slightly tender to the touch.

I am thankful to this day that I knew about immersing burns in cold water, the value of Lavender oil for burns, and the ability of clay to take pain away and heal burns.

I am never without these items. I learned about the uses of clay from an old book called “Our Earth, Our Cure”. It has other info in it, some useful, some not so much, but interesting and others might like the book. The book describes many uses of clay, and how to mix with water properly and keep on hand for use.

I highly recommend the book, and having clay on hand, mixed with water. I mix one pound of dry powdered clay at a time, keep in an earthenware bowl with a plate on it and periodically add water to keep it nice and moist, like pudding. I use clay for burns, skin infections, cuts, insect bites. It is also good for a face mask and home facials.

There may be better books about clay, but this has served me (and others) well over the years.

Interesting. When I was a teenager, I worked at a soda fountain in a drug store. I would make hot chocolate by boiling the milk and then putting it in a milk shake machine to make it frothy - 1 cup at a time. One day, I got an order for 3, so I got the bright idea to do 3 at a time, which made the boiling hot milk come out of the top of the milk shake cup and on to my hand. The druggist had me put my hand in ice for about 30 minutes. It never made a blister - which amazed me. Up until then, when I got a burn my parents used butter on it. From then on, I’ve always used ice.

We use American Lab silver gel on burns after the cold water thing. Really works.

I’m learning a lot from this board, and was wondering if there is a board for using natural healing methods with pets. Or if we could do that here.

Maybe just post on this one. Or start one just for pets, might garner more attention.

Btw how is your wrist/thumb joint?

I have read that silver products work well. Since I already am stocked up on Lavender oil and clay, I’ll keep using them if I get burns, but it’s good to know of other things that work. Burns are NO fun at all.

Icy water really takes away the pain from burns. One time I badly burned my left hand. Kept the hand in icy water for hours while reading. It took 8 long hours but finally the pain left and never had blisters. Now I will keep in mind the use of EO and clay. Thank you!

The cold or icy water also keeps the burn from burning more. By removing the heat, the burn heals much faster.

Starting a board about natural healing for pets would take more time than I have to attend to it. Maybe someone out there can. Until then, I’ll just post here.

Re: my wrist - going to an ortho this week. Still suffering. One thing that has helped the most is Marjoram essential oil - 3x a day.

vet says my cat has an ear infection. Drps 2x a day. Has anyone ever tried to put drops in a 14 pound cat that is as strong as a tiger? I’m not doing very well at this and I think he’s ready to leave town. (He’s an outside cat that I rescued after the neighbor left him behind when she moved.)

I’m disappointed the castor oil pack did not help. I wonder if you used enough castor oil, it has to be used very liberally.

I’ll copy the original method as taught by the Cacey institute below, maybe you might try again? Just an idea. We’ve used it many times and it’s always helped.

Not copying, very lengthy with a short video. The castor oil pack described below is for a large pack on the torso, so those part of the directions are not relevant. The main parts that are relevant, to me, would be how to make the layers of flannel and how much castor oil to use.

The heating pad thing of course does not work on a hand, or even on other parts of the body if one does not lie down as directed. We’ve never used a heating pad with castor oil packs and they still have helped.

Pinging the list about two things:

1. Links to authentic directions about using castor oil packs, I described above my abbreviated method (can find post number).

2. A virtuous woman wants to know if anyone has ideas about a cat ear infection situation, which brings me to this idea:

Does anyone want to start a Natural Healing For Pets thread? I think with so many people who love their animals, such a thread would be very popular. Any volunteers?

Instant Dementia
Sorry for the long story, but here is what happened to me. I cracked a back tooth (popcorn) anyway, the dentist said couldn’t be fixed had to have a crown and suggested the crown next to it be replaced. So I’m such a wimp with dentists I asked to be put out, they don’t do that. I was given laughing gas (don’t remember technical name), the nurse tapped me on the shoulder (I was still in dental chair) and asked me if I was ready to go yet? So I got up and went out to the car, thinking I had been in the office for about 45 minutes IT WAS 4 HOURS.

Don’t remember driving home, went straight to bed (so tired), after being in bed for 3 days, DH asked me to find something on the computer for him. I got up and dressed, went down to office and I could not remember how to turn on the computer (something I use everyday).

I didn’t know what to do, if anyone asked me a question, I just looked at them I couldn’t process anything. I sat and cried, I was so scared.

Called the dentist and said the laughing gas never wore off - he said it is instant when you stop using it. He would ask the others in office and call me back - he never had a patient react like this.

Anyway, when he called he asked if I had any sublingual Vitamin B, I said yes, he said take 3 and then in 30 minutes take 3 more.

I took 3 and in 15 minutes I took 3 more - in 30 minutes I had all mental faculties back. He said the brain can’t function without vitamin B and that laughing gas totally depletes vitamin B in your system.

Based on this, I just wonder how many dementia patients only need Vitamin B. (but then that would be too cheap of a fix and not enough $$$ prescription.

That is an incredible story. Not too long at all. This could be of vital interest to many people. I hope all the pingees I just pingified see it.

Any dentists who give patients laughing gas, I think it’s called nitrous oxide, should warn them about this. In fact, sounds as though patients should be monitored when they come out of it and if they exhibit those symptoms, should be administered sublingual Vit B (which I never even heard of, I suppose drops to go under the tongue).

People with dementia problems or relatives should try adding more Vit B.

I use a mix of tea tree oil and olive oil for my dog’s ear infection. One part tea tree oil to three parts olive oil. Used once a week, it keeps it under control. Prescription medication has never completely cured his chronic ear infection.
