OK, FREEPERS, LET'S START THIS CONTEST FOR THE GREATEST SONG OF THE '70S.
The baseline for the contest is the top 7 hits of each year of the '70s, as compiled by BILLBOARD. This is not based on personal preferences, biases, prejudices, or counter-culture fringe-element reactivity.
The rules in general will be to vote for everything shown.
NO equivocating, ties, or omissions. Votes will ONLY be counted if the "ballot" is COMPLETE.
*ROUND 1*
We begin by taking the #7 songs of each year and paring them from 10 songs to 4 (to set up brackets of 64 for the rest of the contest).
1970 "I'll Be There" The Jackson 5
1971 "Go Away Little Girl" Donny Osmond
1972 "Lean on Me" Bill Withers
1973 "Crocodile Rock" Elton John
1974 "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)" MFSB
1975 "Fame" David Bowie
1976 "Love Machine" The Miracles
1977 "Don't Leave Me This Way" Thelma Houston
1978 "Baby Come Back" Player
1979 "Hot Stuff" Donna Summer

#16. I nominate MacArthur Park by Richard Harris as the worst rock/pop song of all time.
If he sang that song in a real park, all the birds and squirrels would have died, esp. by suicide. The grass would have turned brown and burnt up, and the trees would have become tooth-picks just to get away from that song.
Think you can rank these ? I know these are all before your time, Impy, but care to give it a shot ?
Cant Live Without You, Harry Nilsson. <—This one is the national suicide anthem.
Best to worst
1978 “Baby Come Back” Player
1972 “Lean on Me” Bill Withers
1975 “Fame” David Bowie
1976 “Love Machine” The Miracles
1973 “Crocodile Rock” Elton John
1979 “Hot Stuff” Donna Summer
1974 “TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)” MFSB
1977 “Don’t Leave Me This Way” Thelma Houston
1970 “I’ll Be There” The Jackson 5
1971 “Go Away Little Girl” Donny Osmond
Yep, that's how it was. In second grade, if you were "cool", you liked the Jackson 5, LOL!
Written by, Pete Ham and Tom Evans, of Badfinger, who both wound up.....killing themselves.
I’ve heard of some of those songs.
I’ll get back to you when I listen to them all. ;p
But what about The Cake?
Would someone really have left it out, and in the rain?
The Bowie song will require earmuffs. Sorry, dfwgator.
Nilsson - yes. Long fingernails on a blackboard, but try Harry Chapin - “Taxi” and “Cat’s in the Cradle” (the revenge song).
Both enough to make you ram chopsticks into your eardrums to stop the pain.
At least “Everybody’s Talkin” wouldn’t drive you insane or to suicide, if that is any concession.
God Bless my Billboard’s Top 40 Hits book. It fills in the gaps of my old gray cells memories.
Yep!
#31. About Richard Harris leaving the cake out in the rain. Remember, he’s oh so British! Not bad in “A Man Named Horse” if you like that kind of survival movie (Kevin Costner - Dancing With Wolves” and Leonardo DeCaprio in “Revernant”.
At least Marie Antoinette said about the peasants, “Let them eat cake”.
Fame: The intro guitar riff was a collaboration between David Bowie and guess who?
John Lennon! I can hear John’s influence on the tight phrasing of those opening bars.
Listen to the first part, the most recognizable part, and you may see what I mean.
Best to worst:
1972 “Lean on Me” Bill Withers
1979 “Hot Stuff” Donna Summer
1974 “TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)” MFSB
1976 “Love Machine” The Miracles
1970 “I’ll Be There” The Jackson 5
1977 “Don’t Leave Me This Way” Thelma Houston
1978 “Baby Come Back” Player
1975 “Fame” David Bowie
1973 “Crocodile Rock” Elton John
1971 “Go Away Little Girl” Donny Osmond
Oh, I don’t think “Without You” is bad, only that it is infamous as a song to commit suicide to. As for “Cat’s in the Cradle”, I heard that song played enough times in childhood to last a lifetime. I like Everybodys Talkin if only because I’m a fan of “Midnight Cowboy.”
1975 “Fame” David Bowie
1973 “Crocodile Rock” Elton John
1978 “Baby Come Back” Player
1972 “Lean on Me” Bill Withers
1976 “Love Machine” The Miracles
1979 “Hot Stuff” Donna Summer
1974 “TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)” MFSB
1977 “Don’t Leave Me This Way” Thelma Houston
1970 “I’ll Be There” The Jackson 5
1971 “Go Away Little Girl” Donny Osmond
Please add me to your ping list...thanks:)
