The war between die-hard fans of both the 9mm and .45 ACP cartridges rages on. Good news is, all the squabbling has given us the best gun-related memes ever.
A test of manliness is in order
This serious cat is after your soul with its .45 ACP, obviously.
More knockdown power. True story.
Duuude
you just resolved an age-old battle. Read the rest of the 9mm vs .45acp memes here.
In honor of the ever-present errors in spelling and grammar from that site, I rewrote you comment to fit better:
This Thread Am Gay.
I got a range in my backyard, out to 150 yds. I built the first one on the mountain and 4 neighbors followed suit. Around here we hear shootin' almost daily, from my range or a mile away at one of the neighbors. We practice a lot ... and we're getting to be pretty good shots.
I tell the spousal unit it's the sound of freedom ... and it doesn't bother me at all. Firearms are a way of life here, and I feel blessed to be able to do as much shootin' as I please.
It wasn't always that way. When I lived on pavement I had to drive miles to a range or out to the sticks where I could practice. Now I live in the sticks and couldn't be happier.
That's what I always come back to. People who say something along the lines of "xyz is worthless, you want to carry..." well, they never seem to want to take a round or two from xyz, so I guess it isn't worthless.
What the various salesmen and/or caliber zealots won't tell you, and even more rarely admit... It isn't really the caliber. So many other factors come into play - first, you have to have a weapon on you; then you have to actually get to it in time/place/geometry to make a difference; then you actually have to operate it; then you have to hit your target... etc etc. Sure, caliber, style/design (single/double stack, revolver), manufacturer, manual safety/grip safety, one in the chamber -- all factor in, but they are only part of a multi-dimensional problem with varying capabilities and priorities for everyone. Call me a heretic but - there is no "one caliber to rule them all."
The best caliber is the one you have with you when you need it.

This is a true statement.
If you carry, then carry all the time.
If you carry all the time you will want a gun that is comfortable to carry. For me that means a smaller weapon than a 45, but everybody is different.
“What the FBI designed and changed-to after their “1984 Miami Shootout”.”
In reality bullet development has come so far since 1984 that there is no significant difference in performance between 9mm, 40 S&W and 45 ACP. Bonded, expansion controlled projectiles (Gold Dot, HST, etc) in all 3 calibers are about the same in penetrating clothing, windshields, plywood and other barriers while reliably expanding. Despite my previous post (just stirring the pot) if I were to pick a caliber today it would be a 9mm for highest capacity and low recoil.
Whenever I go to the range, I always call my wife and hold the cell up for her to hear what I categorize as the Sounds of Freedom. Unfortunately, don't have range in my yard especially if you don't consider the occasional squirrel that wonders in much to the chagrin of my neighbors.
For me, the 1911 hits almost naturally. Something about Gunny’s gentle and melodious coaching stuck, and I’ll hit if I simply pull the trigger - in the black if I look at the sights. But as the weapon comes up, it is already almost perfectly on target.
For me, the Glock 17 has that charming trait that it will never run out of ammo. I fire a couple hundred shots a day with a variety of weapons, including rapid fire, and it’s been months (years?) since I missed the black. The 33rd time I pull the Glock trigger, if I’m not out of enemies, I know I’m in deep trouble!
For home defense, if I’m using a handgun and not the Remington 870, I would start with the 1911 and switch to the Glock rather than reloading. If I need more than 8 shots, I don’t want to have to count my shots.
It’s kinda:
BANG! vs. BANGBANGBANG BANG BANG (reload) BANG BANG!!
Massad Ayoob wrote a long, detailed account of the Miami Shootout.
The 9mm performed just like they were supposed to. The real problem was the guys took hits which killed them but would not quit fighting for some time and one of them was armed with a Ruger Mini-14 which was a devastating weapon for that type of gun fight.
One of the 9mm slugs tore the aorta off one guy and he was dead but did not know it for a while.
Haven't seen Ayoob's version, but wondering if Ayoob had read Dr. Anderson's book?
Having a half dozen autos of various Caliber I have some observations.
I have the Sig that is now the military’s choice, a striker fired modular design, in 9mm. I changed the grip to small with same barrel, use straight 8 nightsights.
As far as .45acp, I have the best imho one, a Glock 30 S, it was ported, I shortened the grip using 9 rnd mag, with Pearce mag mod, so I have 3 finger hold, I use Tungsten recoil 3 oz. rod. Trigger is lightened to 4lbs. and smoothed out using MP3 and titanium parts.
This Glock 30 S has very low weight, height and slide is from Glock 36 so its slimmer. Makes very concealable and light package. Sure the 9mm ammo is great these days, but there is something intimidating about that big hole at the end of a .45 barrel that makes the bad guy know your packing real heat.
I carry the 13 rnd. mag on my belt so that is 23 rnds of ammo, IMHO more than enough ammo.
With Glock double recoil spring, tungsten weighted guide rod and magna porting the .45 recoil is well tamed.
I don’t know.
Yep! 40S&W!
In the hands of a very determined adversary, neither were a match for the 223 that took out two agents.
Wanna buy a $45 book, postpaid? ;)
In a defensive situation, the best caliber is the one you have with you. What? You don’t have a caliber with you? For shame.
“I recommend .45acp. That being said, when I carry.....its usually a .380.
For young healthy strong military or police I believe a more powerful round should be the round of choice. Though 10mm/40S&W or .357 sig would be preferable........ the .45 ACP is a real thumper.
all of that being said.....I wouldnt want to be on the receiving end of a 9mm....or evens 22lr. Like I said I carry a little pocket .380.....because its little and fits right in me pocket and doesnt pull me trousers down.”
If the 9mm was good enough for the Wehrmacht its good enough for me.
If the 45acp was good enough for the US military its good enough for me.
The next book I am going to buy is Travis McGees latest. I cant even afford it right now but maybe next month when I dont have an insurance payment.
Yep. The best caliber is a head shot. Two in the head makes sure they’re dead.
