The magic oven is now a reality

There are times I would like to make the effort of throwing dinner for friends or family and cook everything from scratch. But the labor of love just takes so long. In spite of all the inspiration from Rachael Ray, the 30-minute meal is actually more myth than fact.

Thawing your food alone may take almost an hour. Then there’s the diligence of slow cooking the meat to your desired tenderness. Not to mention the many times you will have to change pots and pans, as the vegetables, which cook faster, have to be cooked much later than the meat—you can’t just dump it all in together. And then there’s the extra challenge of creating a signature dessert.

Wouldn’t it be incredible if you could just dump all your ingredients in an oven and when you open the oven, everything’s ready to eat? Then even the busiest of executives would have time to create and appreciate gourmet meals when they get home.....

Looks like no.

All that metal would have been a fire hazard in the microwave.... : )

I guess they will have to modify the meaning of the term “cooked to perfection” - then anything is possible...

“Do they still make that?”

I don’t know...that’s a good question. I just looked for a picture of a TV dinner like we had as kids. The beans and franks looked familiar. Luckily, our Mom was a great cook and we only got those as occasional “novelty” meals after begging her to buy them at the grocery store.

Now, as adults ourselves, we buy the 5-lb bags of Tyson’s boneless, skinless breasts or their pre-breaded tenders; the BJs brand 2-lb bags of frozen broccoli or the MicroPict frozen mixed veggies w/butter sauce (ready in 7 minutes in the m/wave); some 5-minute rice...and you’ve got a fairly healthy meal in no more time than the tv dinner. The only thing missing are the juicy home-grown tomatoes from Mom’s backyard garden. The hard red, vine-grown baseballs from the store have to do.

Brings back memories. Ham and eggs was my favorite, though I seem to remember that it came with a B-2 unit, which wasn’t as good as a B-3 unit. I also liked the fruitcake.

I think you miss the point. He does want a fast meal. He wants the desire to immediately translate into action.

How do I know this you ask? Because I am the same way. I once bought a book called: The cookbook for men who hate to cook.

I soon found that the book was a piece of junk, because it wanted me to "cook."

I’m skeptical. The microwave and the crockpot were supposed to be so great; but the food just doesn’t come out good.

And most of the hands-on time it takes to cook a decent meal is prep time, anyway...

Oh, I agree.

I need to learn more about this one, but I like to stay on top of the technology. I use sous vide all the time, two meals just today. ;)
