There are good reasons not to confine the discussion to academic journals.
In the latest issue of National Review, John McWhorter has a challenging and thought-provoking essay about the topic of race and IQ specifically, about whether that topic should even be up for discussion in liberal-arts classrooms and in the media, as opposed to in scientific journals. He suggests not, as there is nothing to gain from discussing it.
I read McWhorters essay with special interest because I have violated the norm he proposes. I have written about race and IQ on numerous occasions and for a general audience, as I am not even a specialist myself. See, for example, my 2013 essay in this space about Jason Richwines departure from the Heritage Foundation, as well as my RealClear reviews of Nicholas Wades A Troublesome Inheritance and Richard J. Herrnstein and Charles Murrays The Bell Curve (on its 20th anniversary).
In light of McWhorters essay, I thought it would be worth explaining how I became interested in this topic and why I participate in public discussions of it.....

you should be able to study anything you like. Race and IQ is like anything else. The temperature of the sun’s interior. The age of the pyramids. Race and IQ. Heck, I remember ethnic humor. It was funny. Now there are plenty of things you can’t say or do, and things you aren’t supposed to even think about. I think about all sorts of things.
An excellent objective definition of both Race and IQ would be required before even thinking of a trip down THAT Rabbit Hole...
Who was Alexander Graham Bellski?
Don Rickles and Redd Foxx were especially funny.
Alexander Graham Bellski invented the telephone pole, didn’t he?
ethnic humor was funny because there are stereotypes for a reason- generalities. We all have our little quirks.

Yes. I remember that.
Just remember that the testing that makes whites feel so superior to blacks in turn proves that whites are inferior to Asians. Two edged swords can be a bytch.
I sometimes think that whites just simply put more energy into taking standardized tests and the blacks have got a more passive attitude of keeping calm and not stressing out about trying very hard. Thus the whites get better test scores. With regards to the orientals: maybe they do study lots more for achievement. Take a look at micro-chips and the oriental names of the people in charge. The work ethic is strong there.
A distant relative of mine.
That's indeed an excellent thing to keep in mind!
The average IQ for any particular group is meaningless on an individual level... I have met blacks that were smarter than I am (and I'm pretty smart) and Asians that were dumb as a box of rocks.
BTW: If you need smart people just come to FreeRepublic, it's where the smart people gather. I'm quite sure that the average Freeper IQ is higher than ANY ethnic group on Earth.
Yes. I would very much like an exact, scientific definition of ‘Race’.
“Who was Alexander Graham Bell[ski]?”
“A distant relative of mine.”
Or maybe, a long distance relative.
The “Public” definition seems to have devolved into Skin Color, “Religion”, Primary Language, Political Philosophy , and others.
It’s become a Fool’s Errand.
The environmental and cultural components of intelligence can be even more provocative in that they implicate behavior and choices that are voluntary and preferred, such as: family cohesion; diet; drug use; child care and discipline; and the preference for or aversion to education.
Race and IQ matter when social Marxists say the reason for black crime and the state of black neighborhoods is because they are oppressed. You cannot expect a population of people with an average IQ of one standard deviation below whites to maintain the same level of civilization. The reason for black crime and poverty is average IQ, not oppression.
Don’t forget Alexander Graham ACME.
