Just when the Trump brand was teetering on the edge of no longer being the gold standard, along came TV producer, Mark Burnett.
Burnett was the creator and chief architect of Survivor, the biggest of the TV reality shows that attracted viewers by the millions to watch beautiful people compete in exotic spots such as the Australian outback and the Polynesian islands.
But Burnett's fabulous success couldn't mask one bit of unhappiness at the center of his life: he had little kids at home in New York and he was hardly ever there.

"There has to be a way to do a successful show in an American city," Burnett thought. The way home, he realized, was through Donald Trump...
What a great story this is. Must reading for Trump fans! To summarize the story wouldn't do it justice. It's a fabulously written "All about the Apprentice" piece that praises the whole concept of the hit TV show and explains the origins of the show, how it was sold to NBC, and how the show adapted and evolved. The story also shows how The Apprentice elevated Trump's fame to the national stature that led to his successful running for President. NOTE: Click on the photo above to see a much large scale image.

Highly recommend this read...
There were so many people who were guests or competitors on The Apprentice were nowhere to be seen last summer during his electoral campaign. Very few had the nerve or clarity of thought to stick by Donald during his many hours of need.
Still, he persisted. No time for a pity party, says he.
You can bet that Donald well remembers who ran away from him during that long hot summer. Comeupance will be coming up. All in good time.
It comes across as attempting to play down Donald Trump’s appeal, but it is not too bad.
Overall, I give it a C+.
Thank you for the ping.
Like many Trump supporters I have never saw one second of that show, but many in the media claim the only reason he won was that he was a reality TV star
Thanks. I enjoyed it. He’s a smart person with chutzpah and charisma.
I never saw Apprentice but I saw many seasons of Celebrity Apprentice. It was a wonderful show; I looked forward to it every week. I watched Ahnold’s version too and did enjoy that as well.
Yes, there is an attempt to throw in a few zingers. I suppose Fortune wouldn’t publish the piece if it was all praise.
My score would an A+ on writing quality and interest level. And I would give it a C+ on some of the zingers. So my score would be B+ overall.
Nice...
And I’m the opposite... saw the early Apprentice but never saw the Celebrity version :- )
Television probably went a long way to transforming Trump from a successful tycoon to a man with a national presence and conscience.
I love the way the article looks inside Trump and explains how he worked hard to develop the show and it was obvious that behind the “You’re Fired” tagline there was a guy who listened and cared.
Chutzpah indeed!
Ditto here. The only thing I knew about Trump was that the little kid in Home Alone 2 asked him where the bathroom was.
How ‘bout that! DJT had a television show. Surprise it may be, but he never got this vote due to his show. He earned it due to the fact he has won in every venture he begins. At times a fast win; other times it may take a bit longer in the ups and downs - but in the end he wins. Truthfully, never watched The Apprentice. People might write reviews on the show but far be it from me to agree or disagree with them. Wouldn’t seem fair.
Donald Trump is not an easy person to like on first meeting. He is blunt and opinionated, doesn’t suffer fools and seems mostly about his empire. Over a longer time, people figure out when he’s being serious and when he’s just joshing.
“The Apprentice” allowed the public to “know” Donald Trump and smoothed some of his rough edges. Instead of coming across as a wealthy egotist, the show allowed him to be seen as a winner with a desire to help “the little guy” if the little guy was a fighter and a thinker.
The early seasons of the show included a short segment each week where Trump spouted nuggets of his business philosophy. I marveled that a prime time tv show could be about business but I’m sure it taught many who might not have ever considered starting a business.
Burnett created the entertaining format. Trump was the one who could sell the show’s personality. Personally, I don’t like the Celebrity format. It’s like a parody of the real Apprentice show.
It's hard for me to have perspective because I went to college in north jersey in the late 80s/early 90s but Donald Trump was absolutely inescapable at that time. Every newscast, every paper had him featured daily. "The Donald" was larger than life but I was in his backyard so was he as "yuge" outside the NYC area? I think so if he was marketing ties and steaks and wine and whatever all over the country.
My vote was because of his rallies/speeches and the message. And I knew HRC would be the end of this country.I still believe that.
Thank you, very much, poco. A fun read!
Yes, it just cements my high opinion of him. They repeat how he asks how he did a lot, but that is a disarming trait by confident people who have some humility, NOT the trait of an arrogant insecure egotist.
I loved the show to see how he cut through the chaff of all those personalities and their various efforts. He was almost always right except when one could see he kept some crazies pretty long just for ratings (like the actually brain damaged Gary Busey).
A TV news reporter once told me that no more than 5% of the filming of a televised news event is ever seen on TV. If so, Trump's live rallies and pressers are as honest an expression of "real life" as you'll ever see on TV.
Personally, I watched only a few episodes of the Apprentice, and only during the first season of the show.
Looking back, it's Trump himself that stands out. By watching him, I suppose I hoped some of his success habits and wisdom would rub off on me. Not sure it did, but the attempt to teach and idolize entrepreneurship and business competence is a noble thing -- and the Apprentice broke new ground in that pursuit.
But I remain a disciple of Trump, not because of the Apprentice, but because of his glorious election campaign where I got to learn about his heroism, hard work, compassion, and wisdom. His human faults remind me of my own sins.
Daily I pay homage to his shrine, the Trump Twitter page :- )
Loved your comment. Just as The Apprentice gave we, the public, a clearer view of the real Donald Trump, the show also prepared the Donald for his higher calling.
It gave him the experience and courage to ride down that escalator to Hell where a government, mass media, Wall Street, and Hollywood were waiting to destroy him.
The sweet irony is this: a political Apprentice is now pulling America out of a great swamp of greed, sloth, mediocrity, and corruption. And he will raise America up again to the glory of God and all free, self-reliant men.
