Deep question: why hadn't Communism/socialism been tried in the ancient world? The Founding Fathers ensconced in the Constitution, a system of government proof against pretty much anything but Alinskyism / "The Long March" through the institutions (e'en though still pretty resistant to *that*, and it took Judicial Review *plus* a central bank *plus* income taxes *plus* universal suffrage *plus* the 17th Amendment *plus* Women's Suffrage *plus* and income tax *plus government schools *plus* mass media to get us there); and I can't help but feel that the Constitution not being proofed against it, is merely because the Founding Fathers hadn't seen it in action yet...
