My wife was a teacher for over forty years (K-8 but mostly 4th grade). One of her teacher acquaintances had never read anything that wasn't an assignment in college. She had a telephone book and that was it, no books, magazines, newspapers, TV guides, NOTHING. Now that is sad!

PS Her husband was "thick as a brick"!
As I watch TV I ask my husband, “How many black forensic pathologists could there possibly be in this nation? None? They seem to be in every program we happen to watch. “
After reading responses i will have to read it.
When my son was 11 we lived in South Carolina and about a mile from our local good school where he should have gone
But bussing was mandatory via the Supreme Court and my son was choosen as a white student to go to a school out of our district where there was 89% black and 11% white students
so instead of the good school 1 mile away which he had to pass every day in the bus he went 8 miles to another school...
all that year he learned nothing in the academic area
but he did learn to play the saxophone and was in the marching band...
His middle school was the only one chosen in the state to march in the first MLK Day parade in Atlanta that January (Hurrah) and he did end up as the top student in his music class..
His black music instructor told me he was one of the only ones who applied himself..
the only other student who did well was a white girl..
So I had to teach him at home so he could keep up...
When we came to TN the next year it was a good thing I had done so..
The schools here in the 1980s were good schools and better than that good one in SC...
BTW while there was very little money for the SC school there was no end of money for the music department and the band..
everything was paid for
My son got a brand new uniform a brand new sax and a free trip to Atlanta plus other goodies...
He had no problem being the top of his class in all subjects but he didnt learn anything there...
and although I did try to stop them from sending him to the all black school I couldnt change the law...
Excellent post.
Freepers I urge you to read this.
I have a friend who was attacked in a classroom. She was injured so badly that she is now on disability. This was about 10 years ago, and I doubt things have changed.
My brother taught in a inner city school in a large Eastern city for more than 10 years. Everything mentioned in the article would be confirmed as true by my brother. And...I KNOW that he did walk the walk through those “blackboard jungle” halls.
Hey kid
would you mind repeating in this thread what you said to me in that FReepMail ???
I dont know why you sent me a private message and I dont like the fact you did so...
Maybe the other FReepers would like to know what you think...
Please deo not send me any more FReepMails...
While the rest of the world has evolved and modernized, Africa is still in some other century and will always be. They still commit genocide, fratricide and every other kind of cide

Let’s see that would make them oh about 83 years behind Germany? And Europe in general?
What is it, in your opinion, that makes your son’s school different. Could this be duplicated and applied to the snake pits of ignorance and violence that this author has described?
So you taught college sophomores and you had the unruly ‘sit in the corner for 5 minutes’? In my educational experience that stopped in the second grade. So enlightening to see it’s now progressed to the 14th grade. Congrats.
There was also the son of a good friend who was attacked by a pack of feral youths in the school hall. They broke his femur. Charges were pressed. He won his case. These feral youths were again given probation and sent to another school where they likely attacked and broke the bones of unsuspecting kids and teachers.
So I had to teach him at home so he could keep up...

There is word for this: “Afterschooling”!
And...I am willing to bet that the school took **full** credit for your hard work and your son’s high scores.
If this essay seems like propaganda to you....then not much else i can add to it that would make any difference ....Good day.
I don't doubt it. As a long-time urban school teacher, I have witnessed many of those events myself.
My point is not that those events don't occur. My point is that the author describes the events in the most base and demeaning way possible, while completely ignoring the many good black students who are just trying to get by.
The bottom line is that the author of the "essay" is not really trying to give us folks any useful and balanced information. His wording shows that. He is goal is to stir up racial hatred. And we shouldn't fall for it.
Math questions by these COLLEGE students included long division and fractions.

My homeschoolers were admitted to community college at the ages of 13, 12, and 13. They finished their required general courses and Calculus 3 by the age of 15.
So....Since I had to drive them to the school and wait for them to finish classes I had plenty of time to hang out in the student lounge, library, and math tutoring lab. ( My kids were tutors.) I, too, was shocked that high school **graduates*** were in college taking remedial courses in basic reading and even addition and subtraction. They had no idea how to carry from one column of numbers to the next or any concept of ones, tens, and hundreds, etc. Long division was considered “advanced”. Fractions and decimals were **very** advanced.
Our county was predominately white. Very few blacks or immigrants lived in the county at the time.
How old are you? ( Just wondering.)
I disagree with you.
I think conservatives should do what the communists did in the last century. They should identify promising young black and treat them to conservative summer camps and week long seminars, and woo them in every way possible.
If the communists can succeed with Gramsci’s long march though the institutions then conservatives can use the same tactic as well.
