So you taught college sophomores and you had the unruly ‘sit in the corner for 5 minutes’? In my educational experience that stopped in the second grade. So enlightening to see it’s now progressed to the 14th grade. Congrats.

When the behavior was childish, the punishment matched. It worked. The class saw that I was not going to put up with mess, and they buckled down. My toughest girl got a D in my class and the dean tried to get me to raise it; but I knew the student would not develop her considerable talent by goofing off and getting socially promoted, so she got the kick in the pants when it could do some good. By senior year, she won the department prize and her parents thanked me.

You might enjoy the movie Stand and Deliver, about a real-life educator who took ghetto hispanic kids and made them champions of mathematics. He did not do it by worrying about their vanity.
