I have kind of done this before. I have been working to delete a virus all morning on this borrowed computer. I think I have succeeded in the main.
The problem is the virus did cause some problems. Some exe files will not execute. It is probably a registry value that has been changed.
This is a BORROWED computer. I was using it when it apparently got infected. So I have a duty to fix this.
It an an EEPC netbook running Windows XP.
So the registry value at exe in the command line should be what?
SO how do I get access to the registry since Regedit an exe file?
I’m gonna make a poster out of that....
.
OK.
The virus is totally gone, as far as I can tell. But so is the ability of the computer to access the wireless router.
It no longer knows what drive is the wifi or its ‘location’ and the wifi thinks its IP address is 0.0.0.0
I have no idea how to fix that, not the foggiest. I am going to try to connect it by wire and see if that works.
Remember it was a borrowed computer and I need to make it work properly again.
So, I would not recommend Combofix! I suppose the virus had hijacked the network drive but I need to repair this thing.
download the latest drivers for your model

thanks. I’ll try to but that computer won’t go online. I could use a USB card I suppose.
Run it again. I’m not kidding
run what again?
THAT computer no longer has internet capability. It’s network drive doesn’t work. The wifi SAYS its online but nothing reaches the browser.
I am in deep doodoo.
Somewhere between the wifi and the broswer there is the network drive and its been conked on the head or something. It has amnesia.
You can’t get a wired connection either?
first check the bios to see that OnBoard LAN Boot Rom is not disabled.

Did the computer come with any restore disks?
Some computers will have a separate disk partition (usually D:) with all of the original OS files compressed (image) on it. Any chance of that?

You’ll need to backup any personal files on the computer before doing that, as it will wipe the computer clean and restore to original condition.
If worse comes to worse, there’s always the emergency reset button.

This periphally gets close to the question but not the root of the problem
It is a netbook, no disc drives
I cannot Map a Network Drive! I wouldn’t know what to name the folder or anything.... ARGH
I am pulling y hair out.
I don’t have a clue.
It says the wifi is working, but nothing reaches the browser.
crazy.
Whatever the virus and that “fix” did it has ruined this netbook. ugh. I do NOT know how to fix this.
It says the computer is part of a domain. Did the virus try to turn it into a zombie or something?
What does this mean?
Who are the tech guys? Isn’t there a tech ping??
? Shadowace
Seriously - there is a small hole in the bottom of the computer where you can use a paperclip to reset the computer.
Most likely kind of a last ditch thing, though.
The “network drive” you mention is a physical drive connected via a USB port, or is it solid state memory within the computer, or else a virtual drive in memory?
Don’t panic, it’s a matter of some settings, somebody who knows this stuff will show up sooner or later, let’s just keep bumping this thread.
Create a folder called ‘TROUBLE’ and move any suspicious files into it.
Reboot and look for errors.
Run Combofix again. Run it 5 times if you have to.
