It's the week-end... and frankly, I need an escape from all the bad news about Oil Spills, a rude, impudent former Beatle (time to call it quits, sir Paul), a President who's legacy will be measured in how much damage he caused, bad umpiring, a middle east in... well, you get the idea.
So there I was trolling on youtube when I came upon some old friends of mine. And I thought to myself, "Here... HERE'S one thing that's still right in America: Real Music. I'm talking songs with lyrics and melodies that will still be around in 50 years or more. Peformers who have set the mark so high for others, they improved the art form for all.

I had that experienced last nite I was listening to my favorite Oldies radio show. Wow, FUN FUN FUN immediately followed by The Dovells BRISTOL STOMP. Few things can put a smile on me than “the music I grew up with”
Ah yes... I just can’t wait to get on the road again... LOL!
Another reason I believe that entertainers should entertain and keep their politics to themselves and their friends. The only thing an entertainer can accomplish by going public (like McCartney) is to alienate a large chunk of their support base.
Or as a friend e-mailed me: “I’m gonna illegally download ALL of McCartney’s albums... and then DELETE THEM in protest. (LOL)”
Yeah, that oughtta show him.
I say, just enjoy them as best we can sans politics.

I saw one of Carl's last shows in Syracuse with my wife. He sang “God Only Knows” as thank you to all the fans for their Emails and letters of encouragement. I'll be taking that one to my last moments.
Amen to that! And let’s not forget the chills that went down my spine the first time I heard The 4 Seasons record “Dawn, Go Away!”
Wow. . . .the Wilson brothers left us way too early. Would’ve loved to have seen what Buddy H, Elvis, Richie V and others could’ve accomplished had they lived long, productive lives.
Willie looks a bit ridiculous next the the Beach Boys. They’re all clean cut normal looking American Men, and Willie hides behind his piggie tails and scruff.
He’s an idiot savant... a musical genius, and a social doofus.
The Beach Boys have become a little creepy to me. The songs like Surfer Girl and California Girls are great when being performed by 18 year old guys. When performed by sixty year old guys, it's embarrassing, like Woody Allen continuing to have twenty-five year old leading ladies when he's in his seventies.
It brings to mind the episode of Married With Children where Al and Peggy go to their high school reunion. There's an old sixties psychedelic band playing and a hot girl in a bikini dancing in a cage. The band finishes a song and the girl says, "Daddy, can I take a break now?"
One of the things that was great about Clint Eastwood and John Wayne was that as they aged, they took parts that were appropriate for their actual age. They didn't keep playing thirty year olds.
Willie hasn’t been sober for four straight days since 1964.
I’ve been a Beach Boys fan all my life. The last time they were in the area, a friend asked if I was going to see them. My answer was “I don’t know what this group is, but if there isn’t a Wilson brother on stage, as far as I’m concerned, it isn’t the Beach Boys - it’s Mike Love’s travelling oldies show.”
As I approach my 63rd time around the earth track this week I thank God I was alive for the best Era of music ever.
From rockabilly to the girl groups, to the surfing and hot rod groups, Motown, Memphis Soul, Southern Rock and I can't forget what got me started on guitar; Folk music (the fun non-protesting songs i.e. The MTA).
What an era.

When I was about 12 years old, an older cousin was doing basic training in Camp Pendleton. My Dad, being a vet, let him and any of his friends stay at our place during their occasional furloughs. (They got the beds, I slept on the couch.)
One Marine had Sea Of Love on a 45 rpm, and put it on our record player with auto-repeat, then fell asleep on the couch (after devouring about 8 eggs, bacon and pancakes for breakfast and spit shining his boots until they glistened). The only way to wake him up would be to lift the needle off that record. Then he would complain! So we just let it play, and play, and play... LOL. After about 100 hearings, it gets under your skin. Not a bad tune at all.
