This is it. The final year of my life that I can still describe myself, albeit in extremely specific instances, as young.
Like if I were to find myself in a retirement home, for example. A bingo hall, perhaps. The Legion. Or a cemetery.
Boy, compared to these folks, Im young.

Unless something really drastic happens, you’re just about always going to be younger and older than someone.
I saw some footage of my mother at 42.....she looked to my eyes like a little girl. She’s 69 now and still teaches Ballet 3 times a week.
Good for her and you.
30 wasn’t the old age I thought it would be when I was little. I don’t expect 40 to be, either.
Just a bit self-involved, eh?
Many thanks, hopefully those genes got passed down to me, her mother is now 95 and still clucking!
Well...it IS a vanity thread.
If you’re wringing your hands like this over turning 40, I’d suggest perhaps your first 39 were just a bit sheltered.
If I’d known I was going to live this long, I’d have taken much better care of myself.
My folks have been married for 70 years.
I’m not sure I could even stand myself at 70.
I was a bit baffled at the thought of turning 40 in May, but the day came and I actually feel great and feel younger than ever! You will be fine!!!
You’re always young until you hear yourself say, “Damn kids! In MY day....”
You can’t keep from growing older, but no one can force you to grow up.
oh go ahead and let yourself cross over the 40 line. it doesn’t hurt a bit, i promise. it can even be liberating. you can do all kinds of silly things and people blame it on a midlife crisis. only you will know that you wanted to do those things for years but only now let yourself have the fun.
The late great Jack Benny was 39 for about 40 years! I still recall a show late in his career when he was asked his age and replied “49”. Got a huge laugh.
God rest his soul.
I celebrated the 26th anniversary of my 39th birthday last month.
