Check out this VIDEO. It demonstrates the completely DIFFERENT reactions of the U.S. Marines to George W. Bush and Barack Obama. Be sure to note the reporter's comment at the end of the video.

In the President Obama clip, they were in the position of attention, which means they cant react. Then why did several Marines standing behind Barry clap when he departed?

No, I don’t think you’re missing much.

It appears they all got up and clapped which means to me no one called them to attention at the end of the speech. They were free to do so.
I was in a huge formation to listen to then Vice President Bush in the 80”s. We loved him because he was a Naval Aviator. Just prior to his arrival, we were called to attention. Just after his speech, we were called to attention.
If someone had a video of us greeting the Vice President using these juxtapositions, they would conclude that we didn’t like him.

Polite applause is certainly allowed. As Barry walks up to the podium, you can see the officers behind him: several of them are clapping. IMO, the lack of even polite applause is telling and the music seemed overloud as though to compensate, though that might have been partly because of the silence. You're right though, the Bush visit was casual and real spontaneity was allowed, thus increasing the contrast with, IMO, would still exist.
One thing though: President Bush wore a genuine smile of pleasure when he met with our troops, the many of them seemed equally pleased to see him. Barry merely looks grim, and even from the back it didn't look as though anyone was smiling.

When one is at attention, one is not allowed to applaud.
Being called to attention is a sign of respect.

What about the reaction at the end?

At the end, they were not called to attention. So, they are allowed to react with applause.

Looks like two completely different situations to me. In the Obama one it seems very formal, with only the officers applauding. I’m not saying the troops weren’t allowed to applaud, but in some circumstances I can understand no one doing so because it’s a sign of respect. The Bush one seemed very informal, with just the CinC and the troops.

Before the next such visit, the White House will give orders to have the crowd sent in for practice sessions on how to fake enthusiastic heartfelt applause for Obama.

I bet it'll be a long time before the next such visit. The Zero clearly isn't comfortable with our troops. Has he been to visit the wounded heros at Walter Reed yet, or is he too busy throwing parties with Stevie Wonder at the White House and destroying our economy?

You are right. When Obama is inbound they are playing “Ruffles and Flourishes” and “Hail to the Chief.” Those are military honors played for the President and require the Marines to be at attention.

I have seen that response for President Bush in Person. Barack, on the other hand, is all show and no substance. His reception by the military is flatter than Clinton was in the 90s.

While I agree in spirit with the contrast between the show of respect towards these two presidents, I don’t think we’ll truly know how US troops regard him until The Anointed “0”ne orders them to fire on us...
