Exactly 150 years after South Carolina became the first state to leave the United States, a group whose purpose is to preserve Confederate history is holding a dance in Charleston.
The NAACP plans to protest Monday night's "Secession Ball." Leaders of the civil rights group have said it makes no sense to honor men who committed treason in order to maintain a system that kept black men and woman in bondage as slaves.
But organizers of the ball say their intention is to honor men who were willing to die to protect their vision of states' rights and what this nation was supposed to be.
The Secession Ball is happening just blocks from where 169 men voted unanimously 150 years ago to leave the United States.
A protest rally is scheduled for 4:30pm at Emanuel AME Church on Calhoun Street and the group will march past the Gaillard Auditorium to Morris Brown AME Church on Morris Street.
Meanwhile, a new historical marker will identify the site where South Carolina delegates signed the Ordinance of Secession. The marker was unveiled Monday in downtown Charleston, where Institute Hall once stood.
The marker identifies what was Charleston's largest pre-Civil War public space, with seats for 3,000 people. It hosted the 1860 Democratic national convention, which split when Southern delegates wanted to adopt a party platform protecting slavery.

For a war that was not about slavery, South Carolina sure did focus on their right to keep fellow human beings in bondage in their declaration to leave the Union.
I've never denied the slavery issue, however, all of the Confederate states did not secede due to slavery and that is simply fact. Now, the war wasn't waged to end slavery as Lincoln himself said on several occassions. What was it really about?
You speak like a true homo lifestyle liberal.
You speak like a true homo lifestyle loving liberal.
Don’t you have a boyfriend to attend to?
Sounds like you need to buy a pair of ear plugs and some Xanex.
What does “homophobic” mean?
I don’t beleive that this particular event is our great hope of prosperity. And some things can’t be had for money, like the peace and security of one’s own community, and the ability to be able to just live our lives, bothering no one, and asking for the same in return. Not every trade-off is worth it for the almighty dollar.
Xanax amd earplugs wouldn’t have helped my husband having been held up for hours, on his way home from work, on the street but one to our neighborhood way off the beaten track, and having to show ID to reach the home where we’d lived for years, in order to make way for the spring break “kids” of whom a few had to be at least 30, to clog up streets where they had no need to be in the first place.
“...however, all of the Confederate states did not secede due to slavery and that is simply fact.”
Can you name a southern state that did not list slavery as a reason for leaving the Union?
I’m curious — why do most threads on FR degenerate into mindless tirades of homophobic rhetoric now? I mean, I oppose sodomy just as much as the next Biblical Christian — and more than many I would imagine.
But this thread isn’t about queers. It’s about the Secession Ball, the 150th anniversary of South Carolina’s secession from the Union. It’s about the place (or, as some would WRONGLY argue, the lack of a place) for secession as a last resort to retain or restore Liberty to a people in a Constitutional Republic.
How about all the folks on FR doing something novel and sticking to the thread topic — and STOPPING with the “homo” this and “queer” that name-calling — and deal with those issues IN THE THREAD ABOUT homosexuality?! Oh, and while we’re at it, why not STOP with the expletives, profanity and vulgarity — FROM JIMROB on down! Do forum rules apply or don’t they?
Patriot Preacher feels better. Now — back to whistlin’ Dixie... :-)
Tell me more about that flag. Or, got a link?
South Carolina’s ordinance of secession had a flaw: it told the truth. Slavery, Slavery, Slavery! Of course in the cold light of the morning after other states realized that telling the truth was, shall we say, messy and embarrassing. So they tried to avoid being honest. But too late, the truth was out. Messed everything up, too. Outside of that central German superpower, the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, no foreign country was willing to recognize the Confederacy. Why? Because the Europeans considered slavery a barbaric practice. As did most countries in the New World.
As for the northern degrading itself, how? The northern states weren’t engaging in slavery. If you want to look for people degrading themselves, look at the slavers, the ones who were raping and tormenting slaves. They’re the ones degrading themselves. They’re the ones who were running the Confederacy.
“Can you name a southern state that did not list slavery as a reason for leaving the Union?”
Sure, see my post #59 (and there are others). Here’s a link:

I’d call Jeff an honorable man in his private life too. No matter what side we’re on in this unending dispute it helps keep perspective that most of the people we disagree on the other side, like Lincoln or Jeff, were upstanding private citizens.
Anyone who is looking for Little Bo Peep shouldn't look backwards. Our history just isn't perfect or pretty.
Folks who can't appreciate our history should at least try to find a way to accept it.
I believe you're confusing the Declaration of Causes with the actual Ordinances of Secession.
Slavery, Slavery, Slavery! Of course in the cold light of the morning after other states realized that telling the truth was, shall we say, messy and embarrassing. So they tried to avoid being honest. But too late, the truth was out. Messed everything up, too.
No, that four Confederate states did not secede due to slavery is simply fact. I understand that fact doesn't fit your narrative, but it doesn't change the fact.
As for the northern degrading itself, how?
By choosing to violate the Constitution.
The northern states werent engaging in slavery.
A little more study will enlighten you to the fact that this isn't a true statement. There were still slaves held in some Northern states.
This isn’t the reb talk board (nor is it the Abe Lincoln board). It’s neutral ground and as such conflicting opinions on the Civil War are to be expected.
I just happened to be scrolling down the “lastest posts” and saw someone mention “homophobia” so I asked what he meant. Usually when people toss that word around they’re on the wrong side, so to speak, so I was curious.
