What Karl Rove Should Tell La Raza

White House adviser Karl Rove is scheduled to speak tomorrow at the annual conference of the federally funded, left-wing, open-borders-advocacy group, the National Council of La Raza.

If he does not want his speech to look like an act of appeasement, he should confront La Raza on its opposition to commonsense policies designed to secure both U.S. borders and U.S. pocketbooks.

La Raza, which means “The Race” in Spanish, has denounced as “horrendous” and “appalling” the House immigration bill passed in December, which was sponsored by Judiciary Chairman James Sensenbrenner (R.-Wis.) and supported by the overwhelming majority of House Republicans. The bill, which calls for tough worksite enforcement of immigration laws and 700 miles of border fencing, was condemned by La Raza as a “laundry list of mean-spirited and intrusive provisions concocted by the most radical immigrations restrictionists in Congress.”

Will Rove defend the immigration reforms passed by President Bush’s party in the House and tell La Raza that House Republicans are neither “mean-spirited” nor “radical”? He should. House Republicans deserve Rove’s support.

We've NEVER tried controlling a border as wide as the one between the US and Mexico via a fence, so you have zero data to convince me of its effectiveness.

I however, can you show you absolute proof of how a controlled legal entry program reduces illegal entry.

So we have two different problems that need to be addressed differently...we need to enact effective policy to regain control of border crossings, then we need to do something about the people already here illegally.

Agree 100 percent there, Luis. I deal with the same concepts with data hygiene - you first fix your inbound streams, and then you clean up your database. Once we get better border security in place, we can have a good political donnybrook over what to do with those already here. But any such debate is moot until we can regain control of our borders.

Plus, if we've learned anything about modern politicians, you have to force them to carry out what they don't want to do BEFORE you grant them what they really want - or else they won't ever get around to doing the tough stuff.

The only proven way to control the border is to open up paths to legal entry, allowing the market to succeed where law enforcement alone has failed.

You have to actually try law enforcement before you can determine that it has failed.

I think what Rove said wasn't racist, but IMO it was worse than a racist statement - it was an attempt to impunge the motives of his opponent in the debate by implying that Hayworth was racist. That's something liberals do when they want to shut down debate, and usually when they've been cornered by the facts. It doesn't speak well for Rove that he would stoop that low to do the same.

I guess you didn't read my post regarding the San Diego area fence. And, I guess you won't count Israel's wall as data either.

That report you cited is correct in most every point, from my knowledge of that era.
However, the food processing industry along with construction and hospitality industries want the cheap labor gravy train for themselves as well.
That why I believe, short of a nuke coming through, there will never be proper enforcement of our borders. The profits are hugh and series and those that make them are willing to share with those making the rules. The political aspect is rather simple too.
Dubya had to add the 'path to citizenship' to satisfy the Democrats who know this is just a wage control program as well.
