.................................................................
The Poetry Branch has been in limbo since the prior hostess left FreeRepublic April 15th 2003. We've since learned that said hostess has lost her posting privilege. That being the case, and Jim Robinson having given his ok, I wanted to renew the thread.
FreeRepublic is blessed with many fine poets, and we look forward to seeing their poems posted on FR once again. There were many non-poet FReepers who visited the Poetry Branch for the camaraderie; we hope they will return.
I would like to invite everyone to visit and relax at Poetry and Potpourri. Hopefully you will renew old acquaintances for chatting, sharing jokes, telling stories, posting cartoons, etc. Everyone needs a place to escape from the everyday news, make Poetry and Potpourri that place.

Thank you so much for the ping, what a fantastic thread and wonderful part of FR :-) I've been having such a happy time reading and enjoying the gorgeous graphics!
I'll keep my eye out for it in the future and will get on the regular ping list for it when I've narrowed down the way-too-many lists I'm on right now LOL
Thanks so much again to you both :-)

I thought this was just darling:
"Roses are red, Violets are blue,
Oh my, lump in the bed, How I've missed you.
Roses are redder, Bluer am I,
Seeing you kissed by that charming French guy..."
-President Bush wrote to his wife
."And then the finale:
"The dogs and the cat, they missed you too
Barney's still mad you dropped him, he ate your shoe
The distance, my dear, has been such a barrier
Next time you want an adventure, just land on a carrier."
(Barney the dog had a tumble when Mrs. Bush was handing him to her husband on a tarmac.)

I got a dozen roses
From a friend the other day:
But I only have one left,
For I gave them all away.
I gave one to my sister,
Who to me is very dear,
In hopes that it will bring to her
A little floral cheer.
I took one to a friend
Who's not feeling very well:
The flower or the visit
Which helped more I could not tell.
One went to a friend
I haven't known for very long.
She struggles, so in some small way
I hope this helps her carry on.
The rest went to the ones
Who've helped me in so many ways;
They have been a cheerful presence
On my very dreary days.
The Roses were so pretty
I just could not keep them all,
Except one single bud
Standing beautiful and tall.
My friend gave me the flowers
To help brighten up my day,
But the biggest joy I received
Was in giving them away.

She Still Stands From her island sanctuary She stood glorious in the sun, As clouds billowed softly by, I saw Liberty; her torch raised to the sky From the sky flew the demons from the east, By blade, capturing the wings of the eagle's flight, Four riders stormed down delivering death, Laying siege on her fortress of democracy The towers destroyed and the keep damaged, Countless souls delivered into God's hand, The devil's seed had been sowed An unholy bounty reaped Fire, soot, and ash rained down to the street below, Onto The Knights of Saint Michael and Saint Florian, Burying those who try to save Life pushed to the limit never thought to be undone From her island sanctuary she stood immobile, As clouds of smoke, ash, and soot billowed Devastation recognized and dealt I saw that Liberty still stood Her sons shall raise their swords To vanquish the evil back into the night Her torch shall never grow dim It will always be raised to the sky by Martin Connors Philadelphia, PA |

"I would like some vitamins for my son," the mother said as she walked into the pharmacy.
"Vitamins A, B, or C?" asks the pharmacist.
"It doesn't matter, he can't read yet."
