.................................................................

The Poetry Branch has been in limbo since the prior hostess left FreeRepublic April 15th 2003. We've since learned that said hostess has lost her posting privilege. That being the case, and Jim Robinson having given his ok, I wanted to renew the thread.

FreeRepublic is blessed with many fine poets, and we look forward to seeing their poems posted on FR once again. There were many non-poet FReepers who visited the Poetry Branch for the camaraderie; we hope they will return.

I would like to invite everyone to visit and relax at Poetry and Potpourri. Hopefully you will renew old acquaintances for chatting, sharing jokes, telling stories, posting cartoons, etc. Everyone needs a place to escape from the everyday news, make Poetry and Potpourri that place.

Thanks Amy, below is some interesting information I found on Beethoven and his Ninth Symphony, with a link to the words in "Ode To Joy".

"Symphony No. 9 was written when Beethoven was completely deaf. The last movement is based on a poem Beethoven loved. The poem is Ode To Joy. This poem speaks of the Brotherhood of Man. Beethoven used a chorus of singers with this work. No one before him had ever dared break the rules of composition by adding singers to a symphony.

Ode To Joy

By the time Beethoven was 28 he began to notice a hearing loss. At first it was slight. He couldn't hear the church bells ringing in the distance. As he got older his hearing loss worsened. By the time he was 50 he was completely deaf. How sad and strange that one of the world's greatest composers could not hear his own music! Even more amazing is that he wrote some of the world's greatest music even though he could not hear a note of it.

Beethoven's violent temper and moodiness can be blamed in part on his hearing loss. He was so angry and sad over his deafness that he thought of killing himself. He even wrote a suicide note to his brother explaining why he was going to kill himself. Thankfully, he didn't go through with it. He would learn to cope with his handicap and would go on to write some of the world's greatest music.

To hear sounds, Beethoven cut off the legs of his piano and placed the instrument on the floor. He did this to feel the vibrations in the floor when he played.

Beethoven wrote lots of piano music. Listen to Moonlight Sonata to get a musical idea of how sad Beethoven must have felt over his deafness. Listen to Bagatelle in G Minor to hear his fiery passion."

Remember

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go, yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.

For those of you who have not been keeping up with Logan's thread, daily, and the progress he's made, Texas Cowboy put together a wonderful group of pictures. It's a long download for those with dial-up, but WELL worth it. Click on the music, too.

Grab the Kleenex box, first!

OCTOBER

Bright and beautiful art thou,
Autumn flowers crown thy brow,
Golden-rod and Aster blue,
Russet leaf with crimson hue.
Half stripped branches waving by,
Softly as a lullaby,
Tell of summer's days gone by,
Tell that winter's very nigh.

In the forest cool and chill,
Sadly moans the Whippoorwill,
Not as in the summer days,
When he gloried in his lays,
Lower-toned, but sweet and clear,
Like thy crisp and fragrant air,
Warbling forth with voice sublime,
This is nature's harvest time.

Crickets chirp amid the leaves,
Squirrels hop among the trees,
Brown nuts falling thick and fast,
On the dewy, dying grass,
Glowing sun with softer rays,
Harbinger of wintry days,
Tell the year is going by,
Sighing forth its lullaby.

There was this lawyer who drove his shiny new Lexus to work one day. He parked it right down in front of the firm where he worked to show it off to all his lawyer buddies. As he got out, this truck side-swiped the door and ripped it right off.

The driver stopped and ran to the lawyer saying "Are you alright, are you alright?"

The lawyer, now furious, started to scream and berate the driver. "What the hell do you think you are doing? This is my brand new Lexus...Ya know I am a lawyer and I am going to sue you for all you are worth!"

Then a policeman ran up to the scene and said to the lawyer, "Calm down! You lawyers are so materialistic it's disgusting! Don't you know, when that truck ripped your door off, it took your arm with it?"

The lawyer looked down and saw his left arm missing and said "Oh, God, . . . my ROLEX!"

No girl, you didn't kill this thread. It's a little jewel I miss unless someone pings me. And it's interesting you pinged me today because yesterday I sent Rush my favorite poem of all time. I've sent it to President Bush before too. I used to know it by heart.

IF by Rudyard Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;

If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

Speaking of lawyers, there are only two jokes about lawyers - the rest of them are true!!!!!!

A potential client entered into an attorney's office. The potential client said to the lawyer -"If I pay you $300 will you answer two questions"?

The lawyer replied " Yes, what's the other question"?
