Thank you, sandude. You have very aptly stated one of the reasons that I have never completely discounted the "runaway" theory. It seemed to me that many were too quick to believe the adamant claims that Elizabeth had absolutely no interest in boysI agree. I'd rather have her pregnant, barefoot and living in Mexico than one of the awful alternatives.

Edmunds reviewing plea-bargain options Bret Michael Edmunds, who originally was sought for questioning regarding the disappearance of Elizabeth Smart, has asked for more time to review a plea bargain regarding a series of other unrelated charges.
Third District Judge Judith Atherton on Monday set a scheduling conference for Oct. 7 so Edmunds can have more time to go over a plea bargain that involves such charges as allegedly failing to stop for police, assaulting a police officer, and driving without registration and with a suspended license.
Edmunds was the subject of an intense nationwide hunt by police after a milkman said he had seen a car resembling one owned by Edmunds in the Federal Heights area where Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped from her home June 5.
Police said repeatedly that Edmunds was not a suspect in the girl's abduction, but that they wanted to question him. They found him after he checked into a West Virginia hospital, apparently suffering from a drug overdose.

With Tom Rollins attitude it is no wonder he has an EX-wife. He makes some valid points but gets us no further than what has been discussed.

Okay, I have read a lot about what is being said of utahs shelter life. Here are my thoughts.
The problem with most things about Utah-Salt lake Valley is people think this is a small community of LDS living here and are all tight and do what they are told. This isn't true.
Yes there are of LDS members here compared to anywhere else in the world. I wouldn't say however here it is the majority, maybe in prove by the BYU college. The Salt lake Valley has change greatly with the growth. If you lived her ten years ago or more you have no idea how it has changed and is still changing. We have had a lot of people moving in from California, Nevada and Wyoming. I have always wondered why seeing how it has nothing to do with the church. I worked in a large corporation here it. The room that I worked in had 200 people working in there. Of that 200 hundred people guess how many were LDS, One me. So don't tell me LDS rules the roast around. They only thing the have is that it is were the Church Head Quarters are located. Our wonderful Catholic friends Cathedral is very big and beautiful, did you know it was up and running before our own religion got our buildings up and running. The church my have founded this place but they were NOT the only religion that did.
What Ed Smart said about not locking his house because he thought he was safe (or something like that) He is lieing! He and anyone else that lives here knows this. I have never heard such a lead on. Where he lives, you know that they lock there doors. Why did he have an alarm put in if he felt so safe
As for mormons let me give you a hint about something.
I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.-LDS- I do not refer to myself as a mormon. Mormon is a nick name give to the church by non-members. There are however people in the church that are mormons they conduct themselves as a mormon, meaning they act just like you thought they would being a nonmember. There are those that call themselves LDS they are what any God fearing member of the church would try to act, like other religions a Christian. With these two explanation now you think to yourselve which have you seen in people, there truely is a difference and any member of the church that would disagree with this tells you what side of the fence they are on or at least they don't listen to their General Conferences.
I have been outside of Utah alot of times so I know what its like out there. It is just as wonderful out there as it is in Utah. There is all walks of life on this great earth and this is what we need to keep the world going. We all have our own way of saying things and doing things but 90% of the people are all striving for the same thing. To have and to hold our own loving families. To protect and serve rather it be our families, community, or our nieghbors on the otherside of the world.
Rollins states he hasn't live here for 20 years, well theres your answer. He doesn't have a clue. He does bring up good points but, I like Devil-Anse reference that he isn't a very good journalist. He should be reporting the news not using a soap box to spread his oppinion.
To: scaredkat
Scared, what do you think of Ed Smart's statements about ES not being interested in boys, just wanting to spend time with her family, etc.? I would think that at 14 years old and in a public school, it's naive to believe that she wouldn't have the same interests as her peers.
To: scaredkat
He should be reporting the news not using a soap box to spread his oppinion. Tim is not claiming to be a journalist. He is a pundit. He writes opinion columns for political internet sites (eg OpinionNet and The American Partisan).

Tim is not claiming to be a journalist. He is a pundit. He writes opinion columns... So then what are we doing discussing his columns as though what he said were some sort of incontrovertible fact? The point brought up by Scaredkat, about someone not being able to say too much about the mood/lifestyle in a city after being gone 10+ years, is valid. Many things can change in that time.
So we now know the opinion of an LDS easterner, or resident of Toronto, or wherever, about the Smart case. One more opinion to add to the list of opinions we have here. What we sadly lack, when it comes to this case, are FACTS.
To: scaredkat
Thanks for your perspective, Scaredkat. I find the insights of you, and other Utahns, to be far more valuable in trying to understand the background of this case, than I find Mr. Rollins' opinions. This is not to say that Tim Rollins' columns are not interesting or worth reading, it's just that he can't possibly have the ability to have any greater understanding of this case than some other non-Utahn, such as myself.
About Chocolate Chip Cookie's question to you, about Ed's insistence that Elizabeth had not yet developed an interest in boys, my opinion is that she probably certainly did have an interest in them. But a father is just going to find thinking of his daughter's sexuality distasteful. Some people react to this by ignoring it. And a girl is probably not going to reveal such feelings to her father anyway. I don't think it unnatural that Ed denied that Elizabeth was interested in boys. Besides, even if she was interested in boys (which she surely was) doesn't mean that she had acted on that interest quite yet. Not every 14-yr--old girl is "fast." (BTW, I consider even the "fast" 14-yr-old girls to be quite innocent. They think they know a lot, but they don't.)
Suppose Ed were somehow involved in Elizabeth's disappearance. Wouldn't he want to direct suspicion away from him? Seems to me if he had some guilty secret, he would be more than happy to jump on the "runaway theory" bandwagon. But he didn't.
I got the feeling that you guys preferred LDS to Mormon. I use both terms sometimes; don't intend any insult, it's just laziness. There are only a few where I live.
To: landerwy
I noticed that too, Landerwy! Oh, well, at least the guy is honest about it! (So he'd never make it in politics!)
According to (I think) the opinions of many of us out here in "flyover" country, vociferous New Yorkers often think they know more than they do. I mean, there are apparently still people in New York who really believe that people in the mid-section of the country don't have indoor toilets.

I was a nanny for a family in Manhattan. The wife was from Nevada, so she knew there was civilization out West. But her friends were convinced that civilization ended in Chicago, and that we all out West lived with the sheep and the Indians. And I was a novelty because I came from a family of TEN children. We were just poor benighted souls out here.
I did love living in NYC though, I love the cultural life, and the fast pace there. There are some really good people there, just kind of abrupt at times.

About Chocolate Chip Cookie's question
I think the statement, not interested in boys just really means she was not seeking out boys as a boyfriend relationship. I am sure she liked boys, flirted with them and probably had her eye on a couple, but I don't think her dad would even be aware of this. As all 14yr olds the world is really waking up to them they don't really share everything with parents. I do however think there are some girlfriends out there that probably even know more.
-Suppose Ed were somehow involved in Elizabeth's disappearance. Wouldn't he want to direct suspicion away from him? Seems to me if he had some guilty secret, he would be more than happy to jump on the "runaway theory" bandwagon. But he didn't.
Did he? or Didn't he? That is a good question. No he did pick out an innocent teenage boy, but did he pick out a criminal who stole from him a year ago and got away with it, That I believe is a good question and a fair question.
As for being insulted, I'm not insulted by the name of mormon and I mainly meant it for those that are mormon that can't quite arguing about it on this forum. You have always been open minded about everything sides. I don't think you could be insulting even if you don't agree with me or others you don't insult.

And I was a novelty because I came from a family of TEN children.
My Declaration to the World
My name is Timothy Christopher Rollins and I was born Friday May 15th, 1959 in San Diego, California, the seventh of eleven children.
On Saturday August 28th, 1971, I entered the waters of baptism and became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Through the nearly thirty years that I have been a member of the Church, I have been afforded countless opportunities for personal growth, and for that I am indeed truly thankful to my Father in Heaven.
I have come to realize time and again that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God. I also know that through the marvelous gift of the Atonement he took upon Himself not only the sins of the world, but also the pain and suffering of all men (and women) that we may not endure such if we will but follow Him along the road that leads back to Eternal Life into His presence and that of God the Father.
On Sunday April 20th 1980, I was ordained an Elder in the Melchizedek Priesthood of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and two days later on Tuesday April 22nd, I entered the Salt Lake Temple to receive the blessings of the temple endowment. Through the knowledge gained in this course of instruction, I have come to realize even more that God does indeed love us, and that He wants for us to have all that He has, and that a way has been provided that we may become even as Him perfect in every way.
As a member of the Church, I have had the opportunity of serving within the Church in a variety of positions in both leadership and administration. I have been particularly blessed with the sacred privilege of serving as an Ordinance Worker within the walls of the Holy Temple first in the Logan Utah Temple, then in the Los Angeles California Temple and then in the Toronto Ontario Temple. Each of these opportunities has not only blessed my life, but more importantly, the lives of those who I have had the blessing of not only knowing, but also of loving and appreciating for the many ways they have blessed my life and motivated me to improve for the better.
Such is the Gospel of Jesus Christ in its purest sense for if we are to become "... even as I am" (3 Nephi 27:27) as commanded by the Savior in his discourse to the Nephites during his visit to the Americas in the period immediately following his crucifixion on Golgothas cruel cross, it is incumbent upon me to live my life in such a manner that my friends and family, particularly my children and grandchildren, will see that while I am by no means perfect, that they will find in their father, grandfather and friend a man of honor and integrity one whose mission and purpose in life is to walk up to and honor the covenants he has made throughout his life, particularly the ones made at baptism and especially the ones made in the House of the Lord, even the Holy Temple.
Such is my charge and commission. May I live each day of my life in mortality as a preparation for that great and glorious day that I am with my family and friends once again in the realm of eternity, where we will be able to strengthen and renew the bonds of love and friendship that are so much a part of our lives now.
Signed and dated this twenty-sixth day of February, in the year of our Lord, two thousand and one.
Timothy Christopher Rollins

Hewlett Packard is sending me a cd that they say will fix Windows XP permanently. Hi Tregen, I just received my Windows XP fix today. It actually is a floppy instead of a cd. They said they were sending a cd but instead sent the floppy. I installed it and so far everything is working. I didn't lose any programs so that was good.
Before when I did a recovery I lost a program that I had a hard time replacing. What was your pc doing that you had to get the fix? We can discuss this further on private freepmail if you like. So as not to tie up ES forum. I'm interested in what kind of problems you were having.

Another one: jorge g catolica was arrest sunday night for attempting to kidnap a 13yr old, maybe the same on Witnesses credited with foiling kidnapper
Sunday, September 22, 2002
BOUNTIFUL - Authorities are searching for a man they believe attempted to abduct a 13-year-old girl walking alone to a friend's house.
About 7:10 p.m. the girl was walking south on Orchard Drive near 1000 South when a car drove past. The driver turned around and pulled up alongside the girl, Bountiful police officer Scott Gilbert said.
The driver pulled up next to the curb as the girl walked about a half block. At one point the driver told her to get inside, Gilbert said.
Another car drove past during the incident, and people inside thought the situation was strange. They turned around and followed the man's car, then pulled ahead of him and stopped further up the street. The man then made a U-turn and drove away, Gilbert said.
"I think the witnesses were instrumental in helping the victim get away," Gilbert said.
Police are searching for a light blue, older car that is possibly a Lincoln. One brake light is missing, possibly on the driver's side. The license plate is from Utah. The male driver is between 30 and 40 years old, Gilbert said.
There is also another attempt today on a boy walking to school they are looking for a man about 29 brown hair driving a red ford car in ogden

He does bring up good points but, I like Devil-Anse reference that he isn't a very good journalist.Very good post, scaredkat, except for the above. Rollins was writing a COLUMN, not a NEWS STORY. There is a vast difference. Columns are for expression opinions. News stories are for reporting the news. Many readers mistake one for the other, unfortunately.
To: Devil_Anse
Seems to me if he had some guilty secret, he would be more than happy to jump on the "runaway theory" bandwagon. But he didn't.Just the opposite, Devil. If he has some "guilty secret," he definitely wouldn't want people to think his daughter ran away from him -- reputation must be preserved.

"Cherry, I have actually thought of doing this myself. I have a friend in the SLC area who is from a very prominent (politically) and old Mormon family. One of these days I'll give her a call and grill her."
do that....you never know what tidbit might come up....this case can't be finished is it?

The insults from Sherlock & Jolly Green began with them, and began a long time ago. You are mistaken. The insults started on their side after we had the audacity to ask for a modicum of proof of their outlandish accusations of the Smart family, the Mormon Church, and LE.
