BOUNTIFUL - Authorities are searching for a man they believe attempted to abduct a 13-year-old girl walking alone to a friend's house.
About 7:10 p.m. the girl was walking south on Orchard Drive near 1000 South when a car drove past. The driver turned around and pulled up alongside the girl, Bountiful police officer Scott Gilbert said.
The driver pulled up next to the curb as the girl walked about a half block. At one point the driver told her to get inside, Gilbert said.
Another car drove past during the incident, and people inside thought the situation was strange. They turned around and followed the man's car, then pulled ahead of him and stopped further up the street. The man then made a U-turn and drove away, Gilbert said.
"I think the witnesses were instrumental in helping the victim get away," Gilbert said.
Police are searching for a light blue, older car that is possibly a Lincoln. One brake light is missing, possibly on the driver's side. The license plate is from Utah. The male driver is between 30 and 40 years old, Gilbert said.
