I dreaded it too, because we had it done in the spring when the gardens were starting, and I could just see them trampled and covered with old shingles.. Thankfully, they were very neat and did a nice clean job.. Tarps everywhere and not a drop laying around when they left.
The shingles were a little surprise to me.. they are not like the ones that were on there.. They are staggered some and I guess they use them a lot on historic homes. I didn't know if I liked them at first, but I am used to them now.
Also ask them for references of people in town that they've done.. They should give you the phone number of people who will do this.. They asked me if I would, and I said yes.. No one ever called tho..;) Possibly because Al had a little problem about how they did the Cupola. It has leaked, and they came back to seal it twice.. Come to find out, it is not a problem to fix, and it was not "really" their fault, but it wouldn't have leaked at all if they had removed it instead of cutting around it.. Anyway, we are happy with their work, and it was a lot cheaper than the Home Depot quote, which would have been a local company too.

thanks for the info Grannie...its good to talk to someone who had it done recently...the fellow next door to us, did his own, enlisted the help of his family and friends...I know it was a lot cheaper, than having a company do it...but it seemed to take forever...and its not guaranteed...
BigDom did consider this, as he works with a fellow at the PO, who also does roofs...and he and BigDom plus Andy and his buddies would help, but it would stil take two weekends, and then it would not be guaranteed, so we just decided to go with a regualar contractor...
But yes, we will be making inquiries...it pays to shop around and ask around...

I have a really simple pizza tomato sauce from Gourmet. You sweat some minced garlic in oil, add pepper and salt, lightly brown, add chopped tomats, with the seeds removed, and cook and reduce by half. You want to evaporate the water to concentrate the flavour. It freezes as well. Then, you use that for your base sauce on 'za.Oh, strain after cooking to get rid of the skin ;-)
I loved making a 'za with asagio cheese and leeks. It smelled like a diaper but was delish ;-)Use fontina as well.

Do you know any local general contractors, or people that have had renovations? Most generals can do roofs as well. Its the sealing that is the pain, and I've experienced bad roofing jobs especially around skylights.A good local lumber yard may be able to refer as well.
Sorry to hear of your misfortune.Been there, done that several times, so know the pain you have. But at least you get to watch the nail turn black ;-)Just watch out for stair steps. The first time you stub your toe will be awful.

Psychotic part is: It's the county that's supposed to replace the bridge! And the UTILITIES company is having a fit. Usually, it's opposite this. A utilities company wants to put in a substation or a cable building (Phone company, little trailer without wndows that houses a mini router station and the like. Doesn't take up much room, could fit in most living rooms.) and the county is the one having a fit.
Heh heh, this time it's different. Too bad we're the ones getting the smelly end of the stick.
There's a guy up on rte 209 on the way out of Orange County whose driveway has a small bridge over a small stream. You could step over this stream normally. It's only problem is that it's inb a small ravine. Well.. his bridge fell in one fine winter, and he had to replace it in a hurry, or not be able to live in his house. So he goes out and gets everything he needs to redo his driveway.
Enter the bureacrat. He gets served with a cease and desist order. Seems his neighbors (a mile away) figured he might hurt Bambi by replacing his bridge in winter. So he made a small 'loop' in his driveway, and drove through the brook further down in his yard. Last I knew, they were still fighting that one out. Seems his brook has midges living in it.
Finally got rain. We actually needed it here. The local critters have had a heck of a time of it. The creek is lower than normal, so the local deer have taken to yards in search of a good drink. The local koi pond is now their staking out place. They've been guzzling the poor guys' pond like it's going out of style. He's having a fit about it. (This is the same guy who tried to stop them from replacing the bridge in the first place. He's our local environazi. He stated that tearing the bridge down would hurt the little fishies and froggies. He argued with the foreman, then checked the creek for animal parts... what a laugh. It's funny, actually.)

Dang Darks - why don't you relocate to a more sane part of the planet? It sounds like you're surrounded by whackjobs.

I don't think Val has any worry from me.. It would take school and years for me to know what she knows.. I am just lucky once in awhile..
To: lodwick
LOL.. on Loddy's advice? Don't move here, they're just as bad. We have too many liberal jerks up here now.. They'll ruin any good state... Shaheen is a real winner.. Thank goodness she's running for Senate.. Now we just hope she loses.. whew.. Don't want her there either..

Checking in, finally. What a wild and crazy day.
