I dreaded it too, because we had it done in the spring when the gardens were starting, and I could just see them trampled and covered with old shingles.. Thankfully, they were very neat and did a nice clean job.. Tarps everywhere and not a drop laying around when they left.

The shingles were a little surprise to me.. they are not like the ones that were on there.. They are staggered some and I guess they use them a lot on historic homes. I didn't know if I liked them at first, but I am used to them now.

Also ask them for references of people in town that they've done.. They should give you the phone number of people who will do this.. They asked me if I would, and I said yes.. No one ever called tho..;) Possibly because Al had a little problem about how they did the Cupola. It has leaked, and they came back to seal it twice.. Come to find out, it is not a problem to fix, and it was not "really" their fault, but it wouldn't have leaked at all if they had removed it instead of cutting around it.. Anyway, we are happy with their work, and it was a lot cheaper than the Home Depot quote, which would have been a local company too.

thanks for the info Grannie...its good to talk to someone who had it done recently...the fellow next door to us, did his own, enlisted the help of his family and friends...I know it was a lot cheaper, than having a company do it...but it seemed to take forever...and its not guaranteed...

BigDom did consider this, as he works with a fellow at the PO, who also does roofs...and he and BigDom plus Andy and his buddies would help, but it would stil take two weekends, and then it would not be guaranteed, so we just decided to go with a regualar contractor...

But yes, we will be making inquiries...it pays to shop around and ask around...
