hi loddy
when I left nyc my tenement apt (whch was rent controlled) was $339
it was walk-up (no elevator) nearly identical to apt in ''the honeymooners''
the apt I rented in tucson was $330
it was a two bedroom
with wall-to-wall carpet
a huge floor-to-ceiling window in living room, which was whole wall
it had balcony
apt complex came with swimming pool
I felt like a princess when I walked in and saw it
I was stunned I could have all that for same rent I paid in nyc
I am interested in Bisbee cause I can have far more than I have in tucson, for far less money
I'm not doing anything yet, it is just idea in back of my mind
who does not want to live like a king, on the cheap
btw, when I moved out, my nyc apt automatically become de-rent controlled
LL renovated it and rented it to NYU photography professor for $1400/month
I'm sure it's much cuter than when I lived there
but gosh for $1400/month, in tucson you could have mansion in foothills with your own swimming pool
instead of tiny little apt which is still same size as ''the honeymooners'' apt (just less dingy)

Dyan is painting me a picture now.. I can't wait to see it.. I will have to buy a frame right away.. 16x20 is the only size I don't have... I will naturally take a pic of it.. It is going to be part stencil and part freehand.. Sounds nice.. An old worn picket fence and pretty flowers.. Yumm...

old two bricks f? Maybe, two old bricks f?
Don't sweat the dust - just identify it as historical dust from the 18th Century.
Thanks for sharing your magical home - it is lovely.
I've read about the rent controlled places, and from time to time our commie city leaders here try to bring it up, just like they're off on a "living wage" rampage right now, but if governments would just let the markets work freely, everyone would be so much better off.
Since moving west, I imagine that you can see your old landlord's point of view with his property. While "helping" you with your rent, the government at the same time was screwing the owner out of thousands of dollars over the years - where is his motivation to keep things in tip-top shape for his tenants if he can't get market rates for the unit?
I wonder if he got a break on his property taxes for having rent-controlled units, or did he get screwed there also? Nothing screws up so badly as liberals with "noble" plans and schemes for the little people - us, who have to foot the bill each and every time.
If it's really a good idea, some entrepeneur will come up with the way to make it happen, and make money at the same time. /rant. ;-)

hi loddy
it is complicated cause of Depression
people could not pay their rent, and some landlords instantly dispossessed them
they came home to find all their belongings on street
and door to apt padlocked
plus manhattan is not like other places, many people were born in their apt and lived in it their whole life
it is their home
the lower east side was a slum
when I moved there during hippy era, it was just the people who never ''bettered themselves''
don't forget when landlords buy and sell buildings, they know exactly how many apts are rent controlled
my LL bought my building for $80,000 back in 1980
it had huge store downstairs, right on First Avenue
which he could rent for as much as he wanted
stores are not rent controlled
(he instantly rented it for $20,000/month)
even with rent control, LL got increases on apts every year
my apt was $77 when I moved in, $349 when I left
also rent control was discontinued in nyc in 1980
only those who moved in before were still eligible for it
some landlords would buy the building on the cheap, cause of all the rent control tenants it had
then do harassment campaign to get them out
if they were just to be patient, people always move out on their own
when LL bought building in 1980 most apts were occupied by rent control tenants
when I left in '91, only my neighbor Vie who was born in apt, was still rent controlled
but my LL refused to be patient
he did harassment tactics
my neighbor Carmine was over 80 years old
he had lived there since he got married
he was living on small SS check
LL did shenanigans to steal apt out from under him
I went to court with Carmine to get his apt back
Carmine nearly cried ''where would I go'' he said ''if they took my apt''
like everything else, there has to be a solution which is fair to both sides
LL was renting out the store downstairs for a fortune at that time, he let Carmine's apt turn to s&%t
he could have let Carmine stay

there are wonderful landlords, and some are not so wonderful
here in Tucson Nellie used to rent the house across the street
it was duplex then
the people who rented it still come back and visit
and thank her for the wonderful landlord she was
it is good question bout property taxes
yes, I think LL did get big break on them
but I do not know
Love, Palo
Carmine, Vie, most of my neighbors, and new LL were all Sicilian
Vie used to say to me ''this is not Sicily, we don't have to kiss the landlord's behind''

Birding & Nature FestivalThey're having a festival this August 7 - 11.
Your assignment, should you decide to accept, will be to scout out the Bisbee area.
Be on the sharp lookout for micro breweries, coffee shops, steak & seafood feasts, houses of ill repute, and anything else stimulating to the senses.
This message will self-destruct in 10 seconds.

Howdy All...just got back from grocery shopping, and hauling in all the crap, and putting everything away....what a pain....
Gran....your pics are just grand, and your home is something to really show off...I love the pic of Chloe being held, as she surveys the beach....
Neets....time sure is a fuuny thing...doing things you dont like, and time stalls...doing the things you love, and time flies away....
AC....your pics are amazing...going to check out your album later...love that lighthouse...
Habs...stay away from all that stagnant heat...we dont want you to melt...
Loddy...Thats so funny about the El Rancho Motel...on most of our road trips and vacations, we always camped in our tent..but when we drove down from Washington to California, to have Michaels funeral in a cemetary on the California coast, we did not feel like camping, so we just stayed in motels...on the first night, when it was getting dark, we began looking for motels...Andy, who was 11 at the time, said, he did not care what motel we stayed in, so long as it was NOT called the El Rancho Motel...dont know how or why he came to the conclusion...but did you ever notice, almost every town of any size has an El Rancho Motel? I have a snapshot of myself, as a kid, standing in front of a motel, somewhere, called the El Rancho Motel...I bet thats the most popular name of independent motels..
Palo, I bet Miss Lulu is sooo happy, now that she has a large Krafts Singles supply....Young lady basset hounds need their nourishment, to keep up their hefty frames...
The 'Bisbee Basset Bar and Grill' is a fine sounding name to me......This Bisbee place is sounding more and more enchanting...
Well, I better go and start getting BigDoms dinner ready, and pack his lunch for this evening...todays menu is roast chicken, stuffing, cranberry, and green beans...for lunch along with his fruit and other goodies, will be an Italian salami sandwich....
Being as we get up at such odd hours, we never do have our bacon and eggs and traditional breakfast foods during the week...there isnt time...BigDom just has OJ and yogurt when he wakes up, followed by coffee, and then an hour later, he eats dinner, and eats lunch in the middle of the night...its all so confusing for us graveyard shift workers...
But on the weekends, we usually make up for it, by being more leisurely and having a big breakfast in the middle of the afternoon, and eating dinner at 10pm...
Our mealtimes are really all a mess, they way they are shifted around...

Good report on the start to a fine day.
I'd not thought of it, but you and Andy are correct about the unbelievable profileration of El Rancho Motels - they're everywhere. Though the one in Bisbee with data ports and direct phones sounds a cut above the rest. Mrs. lodwick told me I'd have to wait until she was dead before moving to AZ - we'll see. There's no guarantee when our time here is up. My father had everything arranged for him to go first, but that was not the way the Book was written.

You are so right about not knowing for sure about how each one of our 'Books' is written...
We know that my dad had always thought he would outlive mom...she had Alzheimers, and had other medical problems, so dad just figured he would spend several years taking care of her, and then just be on his own...
We can even see how dad hoarded stuff, figuring he would eventually be housebound with mom, and he figured if he had enough stuff stashed away, he would not have to leave her too much....I was amazed, after he died, and me and BigDom packed up moms house, to move mom in with us....
Dad had favorite foods, canned corned beef, spam, and beans, all types of beans...when we began to unload the kitchen cabinets, we found these things in enormous quantities...I mean like 20cans of spam, 40 cans of beans, 30 cans of canned corned beef...all hidden in places in the kitchen, that I am sure, mom never found....
And in dads room, he had all sorts of things to occupy himself with, if mom was ailing and he was just in his room, keeping watch...dad was fascinated with beadwork, especially Native American beadwork...sometimes he would buy things, claiming they were for mom, but we all knew they were for him, as they involved beadwork...
Anyway, it appears he bought himself a brand new bead working machine, and tons of vials full of various beads...all of it, untouched and unpacked, all brand new...he just never got around to doing it, before he got sick...
And in his railway container, gosh, I found two cardboard boxes, full of cigs, so that he would not even have to go out and buy cigs...and also in that railway container, I found boxes and boxes of wood he had bought at the store, for wood carving, and tons of other wood he had found or pillaged, to use for wood carving....
It just appeared to BigDom and myself, that dad was getting ready to put in years of being housebound to take care of mom...little did he ever dream, that he would get sick, and die just a few months later, and that mom would go on for another two years without him...
But in some ways, I am almost glad he did not live long enough, to see how she declined during her last year...totally unable to speak, to walk, to dress, to eat, incontinent, at times, just plain mean...I think it would have broken his heart to see her like that...
On the other hand, when he was ill, mom did not really realize it, because her mind was so far gone...
Each of our 'books' of life, is written, and sometimes its a suprise ending...Which only goes to show, we should live each and every day to its fullest, and carpe dieum as they say...or carpe rosa, "Gather Ye Rosebuds While Ye May"

I like Bisbee Basset Bar & Grill too
mrs L doesnt go for it yet?
maybe she'll come round
do they sell turquoise bracelets made by native americans where u r
if you pass by a store which has a pretty one and it is not expensive
u could buy it for her
Bisbee has the prettiest turquoise
maybe the turquoise will lure her to Bisbee
Love, Palo
To: palo verde
I love turquoise things, tho I really dont have much myself...its just such lovely stuff, but I guess its very expensive...it just looks so lovely, set in silver...
I am not a big jewelry fan, tho I do like to buy pins...hopefully when we get to Arizona, I will find some lovely turquoise/silver pins to buy...
The Bisbee Basset Bar and Grill, must be animal friendly....folks can meander in, get some grub and suds, and their furry friends can join in the visit..
All furry friends welcome, should be our motto...of course I guess we should also say, all feathered friends, all scaley friends, are also welcome...as long as the 'friends' are well behaved, they are welcome...

Gran, when you were talking about folks getting swept away off the rocks, by high waves crashing, that reminds me also of the beach along the west coast...those kinds of things happen all too often here also....
They call them 'sneaker' waves here...you can be on the beach, and it looks either calm, or just smaller waves...and then all of a sudden, for no really rational reason, a very large, enormous waves forms, and comes crashing in unexpectedly....
That happened just a few years in Mendocino California, a very busy artistic tourist town, with tons of shops and galleries, art schools, and such...its also where they filmed all the outdoor shots on 'Murder She Wrote'...altho the town on that program, was supposed to be Cabot Cove, in Mass....in reality it was filmed in Mendocino....
So Mendocino, has always been a large gathering place for tourists and artists and its always crowded there, no matter the time of year you go there...
One time a bunch of tourists were climbing around the rocks around Mendocino, enjoying the nearness to the ocean...all of a sudden, a 'sneaker' wave came in, and dragged a lady out, pulled her under, and she drowned..this was just a few years ago...
Many places along the Oregon, California coast, actually have signs up, warning people about the dangers of sneaker waves...just goes to show you, dont turn your back on the ocean, be ever alert, and ever vigilant, because these 'sneaker' waves are real, and they are deadly....
Say, Palo, Bill might enjoy someday visiting Mendocine, as he likes to paint...BigDom also likes to try out his artistic talents, and he very much enjoys the art galleries of Mendocino, and likes going up and checking out the various art schools, and art symposiums there...its a beautiful area, and should the travel bug bite, you would love visiting there...
