You completed that bassety picture, with your descriptions...those thick, stumpy tootsies, are just so wonderful...we sometimes used to Helga, 'chunky', because her legs were so wonderfully chunky...

And oh yes, those long silky ears...useful as long hair, and useful for covering their eyes, when sleeping..it was so funny, when Helga would drink noisily, and her long ears would be in the water bowl...then she would shake her head, and water and slobber would fly all over the place...

What fun those bassets are...

One thing I've wondered and I hated to admit my ignorance of dogs (because I love dogs) but do bassets have a distinctive bark like a beagle? One house where I went today had a SORT of bassety looking dog and it bayed more than barked. It's a rescued dog and they don't know what breed it is.

Please take care of yourself, and if evacuation is necessary for safety, then I guess you have to evacuate....but its really got to be awfully hard to leave your home and belongings behind, not knowing what is going to happen...

Sending prayers your way...

No bag packed. I'm just KNOWING that all is well! When I see flames, then I'll run like h!ll. I would grab my safe full of valuable papers, and my computer -- the biggies in my life. LOL

Basset do bark like regular dogs, but often their bark, is very deep...and they bay an awful lot...some basset lovers type it out as AROOOOOO...They have long, long ears, a long, long body, short fat stumpy legs, some have a distinctive 'houndy' smell, some slobber an awful lot, they have big sad eyes, and a long tail...

You know what, Mom? In other years when wildfires threatened our very green area and I had 3 dogs, they were all I worried about. Now that they have all gone on to their rewards, I don't worry. I would jump in my car and leave. Priorities sort themselves out, don't they?

We have so few hotels or motels, and whenever the freeway gets plugged like this, people pull off the road and get a room. Usually schools or community centers open up and let evacuees in. They have cots and coffee and lots of new friends.........:^)

Priorities change, when circumstances change...I know, whenever I see people having to evacuate because of fires, or floods, or any other disasters, I often worry about their pets...because sometimes there is not time to get their pets, or sometimes they just cant take their pets along...

I remember watching a program once, about some area where there were terrible floods, and all the people in this area had to evacuate, and many could not take their pets along...

After the rains ceased, and the flood waters started to go down, and all the humans were safe and sound, rescue units went out to homes on their lists, where people had to leave their pets....

The rescue teams went in and got those poor frightened animals...some animals were in their homes, some had gotten onto the roofs, some were stranded up in trees...I always worry about people in times of disaster, but I also do worry about the pets...its nice to know that rescue teams are willing to go in and rescue the pets...

I'll just betcha this dog had some basset in him, then. It was one arooooo after another. Longer legs, though, and more fur than in the pictures I've seen here. Wonderful friendly dog but totally ignored his owners when they told him to stop - LOL

Thank you so much! I really appreciate that. But I'm not feeling anxious. The woman told me "mandatory evacuation" so if I have to go, I'll find an electric outlet and let you know all is well. After the uproar over anthrax, dirty bombs and all, I guess a lil ol' brush fire seems less of a threat. Keep up your prayers and good thoughts, tho. Thanks! (How long does it take to dismantle the cpu, monitor and keyboard???? Under pressure.)
