[snip] When archaeologists excavated the waterlogged peat inside the turf buildings at L'Anse aux Meadows, they uncovered an anomaly that shattered standard textbook narratives about Norse exploration: three butternuts and pieces of worked butternut wood. Because this hardwood tree cannot tolerate subarctic conditions and has never grown within hundreds of miles of northern Newfoundland, the seeds prove that Norse crews were sailing far south into the warm estuaries of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The physical architecture at the site tells an entirely different story from the idyllic agricultural colony described in the sagas. Instead of livestock pens and barns, excavators found elite chieftain halls and a bog iron bloomery dedicated to forging boat rivets to repair ocean-going hulls. Using high-precision cosmic ray dating tied to the solar storm of 993 CE, scientists confirmed that Norse sailors were actively felling trees in North America in the exact calendar year 1021. Combined with microscopic timber analysis showing North American wood inside Greenland farmhouses 300 years later, L'Anse aux Meadows emerges not as a failed settlement, but as a strategic staging post for centuries of silent, unrecorded transatlantic voyages. Interesting. I visited the site in the mid 1970s.

Irrelevant aside — the YT transcript rendered the name as “Lance O’Meadows”. 😁

I wanted to visit the site in 1997 but it was too early in the year (beginning of June) for it to be open.

I think another Norse site was discovered a few years ago on the west coast of Newfoundland.

The video makes a good case for L'Anse aux Meadows not being Leif Eriksson's Vinland. So where was his Vinland? Elsewhere on Newfoundland? Cape Breton Island? Gaspe Peninsula? New Brunswick? PEI?

The hybrid name, part French and part English, of L'Anse aux Meadows, is kind of appropriate. The Norse raided and settled in both France and England.

I hate how AI is forever misdenouncing words, like saying RE-cord instead of WRECK-ord. And putting pauses where they don’t belong, which throws the rhythm of the sentence off.

Like Christopher Walken. When he’s playing one of his iconic off-beat roles, he ignores the punctuation in the script and pauses at the end of every line. It’s distracting and sounds unnatural. In the case of AI, it reminds you that’s it’s a machine pretending not to be.

Thanks. When I visited it (IIRC) there weren’t any reconstructions, just some excavations.

In 1997 it was the 500th anniversary of Cabot’s discovery. I was attending a conference in St. John’s but because of various events going on, it would have been very expensive to fly to St. John’s so I flew to Halifax and drove a rental car to St. John’s (two overnight ferries, and 500 miles each wasy in Newfoundland). But it gave me a chance to see the monument at Gander to the American servicemen coming back from a peacekeeping mission in the Middle East who were killed in the plane crash, and to see Fortress Louisbourg (Canada’s answer to Colonial Williamsburg) on Cape Breton Island.
