The United States Postal Service (USPS) could close thousands of post offices, reduce service levels and raise prices if Congress does not approve legislation to address the agency's financial problems, Postmaster General David Steiner recently warned.
In remarks delivered to the USPS Board of Governors on Friday, Steiner said Congress faces an either-or choice: provide the Postal Service with legislative changes and federal funding to support its public-service obligations or leave USPS to pursue more aggressive measures to reach financial break-even on its own.
"We have peak season coming up, so we would not take any action until after the New Year, but if we can’t get agreement on a legislative package this year, our plans would certainly have to entail changes that will impact service like taking a look at our service levels and closing thousands of unprofitable post offices, as well as raising prices," Steiner said.
His comments come as USPS remains under severe financial pressure despite improving quarterly results, with billions of dollars in annual losses, declining mail volumes and mounting retirement-related obligations straining its cash position. USPS is an independent agency of the executive branch and generally receives no tax dollars for operating expenses, instead relying on the sale of postage, shipping services and other products.
Newsweek has contacted House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune for comment via email.
Steiner said the Postal Service's existing model places contradictory demands on the agency.

What’s the big deal? Just print more money.
Get people to use the service of your delivery mailman...so they don't go o the Post Office.

The absolute need for postal service has declined to the point that the remaining important first class mail should be eliminated by the sender.
A major change has taken place this year. Election propaganda once was firt class mail has been entirely eliminated by what amount to large two sided post cards. The very slick post cards are jammed with info. I doubt if anyone is interested to the point of attempting to learn all that is transmitted on that card.
I shop small biz.
The vast majority use USPS to save money on shipping.
I prefer FedEx or UPS, so I’m using more businesses that offer either of those two.
Small biz using USPS exclusively might want to reconsider, especially if they’ve got customers willing to pay for UPS or FedEx.
Email took over US mail when AOL first came commercial and people realized it’s far cheaper and instantaneous.
A simple but effective USPS cost-saving measure would be to not delivering millions upon millions of mail-in ballots this fall.
To do this, the USPS need merely utilize the force behind EO 14248 and EO 14399. Throw in EO 13848 for good measure.

I use mail exclusively
Many others do too
Mail is important.
I purchase stamps at least twice a year, usually for Christmas cards, birthday cards, and hand written notes. I send packages every now and again. I live in a small town of around 10,000 folks. The people at the post office are great, and friendly. We know our mailman by name. It’s probably unusual these days to have such a nice place, but I hope our PO stays open.
My wife mails birthday cards, Thank you cards etc. It can take weeks to get to its destination as we’re in what is Rated as One of the worse run post offices in the country.
NEVER anything that resembles a gift certificate! We’ve had those NEVER make it to their destination. But online GC’s make that much easier!

The Postal service is in the US Constitution.
It is mentioned in Article I, Section 8, Clause 7, which is known as the Postal Clause.
I remember years ago when the Federal government threatened to absorb email into the USPS. Never went anywhere.

Imprint mailed new Shell MasterCards (that we did not request, BTW) to us about three months ago. We never received them.
We don’t know where they are, or who ended up with them. A USPS employee .. ??? We aren’t able to contact Imprint to report this. Their AI system will not permit it. We get monthly bills, always $0.00 (so far).
The TN AG’s office is involved, but Imprint is ignoring them, too.
Aside from losing 9 billion a year, they were invaluable in collecting mail in ballots and disseminating them to activists working for biden in 2020.
Scary stuff. All you CAN do is constantly monitor your bills. We’ve been in similar situations.
Maybe they could sell a few of their new $3 billion dollar Oshkosh clown cars.
I don’t use the USPS for much anymore.
Except Tax returns or other Fed/State official stuff as required.
Don’t use checks for any bills.
Direct delivery of gifts.
FedEx for important things.

They should go to an odd or even day delivery system to increase efficiency.
It’s never made sense to me. They have been operating at a loss, billions every quarter, for decades.
So how is it exactly the claim is made they don’t get any funds from the government? Show your work. They did say “no tax dollars”; so maybe they have something else going on. How do they make payroll & pension? They are required to prefund their retirement program, but removing that obligation would not move the needle.
