I'm hoping to retire within the next 7-10 years. Maybe even sooner if possible. I have zero interest in living in an assisted living community or anything like that.
I'm hoping buy some land in a rural area, at least 10 acres or so. I want to build my own little cabin and basically just be left alone. I honestly don't know if I can truly be off-grid. I will have a vehicle so I'll probably go the nearest town every so often for food and supplies. I can get batteries and power them via solar or a with a gas generator. Maybe get a propane stove. So I'll have some creature comforts. I want to have a wood stove for heat.
I currently live in WA state. I do like scenery and climate here but I would prefer to be in a red state. I'm tired of idiots in charge here, the taxes, etc.
The states I'm thinking of are: Alaska, Idaho, Montana, the Dakotas and Wyoming.
I'm curious what people here think are the best states for this kind of life. Does anyone here live in these states? What are the pros and cons? Thank you.

Idaho’s not too bad. Should be less expensive than Washington state.
Quiet, trying to get the wife to move up there from Oro Valley
I forgot Coral Ridge Towers in Ft. Lauderdale. An old lady friend recommended it. For $200k you can get a pretty good condo in in the perfect winter destination. I dunno bout the other 6 months. They got AC.
I live in in the Florida Panhandle. The closest town to me is 12 miles away and has 802 people. Next town is about 20 miles with 3000 people.
Very little crime, low cost of living, yet everything that I need is nearby.
I’ve known several who wanted to avoid assisted living, but ended up there because of dementia, spinal failure, and/or disease. Enjoy your good days while you can. Life sends each of us challenges.
“Only drawback is lack of diversity.”
That’s not a bug, that’s a feature.
East Tennessee
Dont rule out northern New Hampshire. GOA ranks it the most 2A friendly state in the country and a lot of “mind my own business” small L libertarians.
Give up on football. There’s DAZN available on your laptop. No need for the big screen. Just turn it on at 2AM. You’ll find out how unnecessary many
things are.
Pahrump, NV...
Cheap land...Low taxes...Lots of gun-training options...
My cousin is looking at Missouri. Land is fairly cheap.
Love Prescott. We’ve spent several weeks during the winter for three straight years. Our last one, we got 8” of snow. Good friend lives there and bought a house on a mountain outside of Prescott because it rarely gets over 90.
You probably would want to avoid the cold and look for something more temperate. Or else you time will be spent laying in wood.
Maybe consider TN, NC, GA or the wilds of AL or AR.
If you really want isolation, WV is hard to beat.
Look at some You Tube videos of Tiny Homes, if you want an economical way to live. You can get a lot of them for a song on the second-hand market, too. Many are equipped to be off-grid with solar, water collection tanks, etc.
‘Tiny House Big Living’ is a good place to start.
We live VERY economically in the SW corner of Wisconsin. Look into living in ‘The Driftless’ area of Wisconsin if you want BEAUTY all around you. And you won’t have to deal much with the idiots in ‘The People’s Republic of Madistan’ which is a HUGE bonus. We’re about two hours East of ‘The Mighty Mississippi’ and then Iowa. Iowa is also a good choice for inexpensive living with lots of space and lots of nature to be had.
I moved out of the ‘Madistan’ area 10 years ago - it should’ve been sooner!
We don’t get as much snow as we used to, but every 10 years or so we get a whopper of a storm. If you’re prepared, life goes on! :)
What is the budget ?
The moon. Everything else is effected by people.

Stay out of Colorado. It has become California Junior.
Prescott has become very expensive. Tons of Californians have moved there and driven up real estate prices dramatically.
Heat is manageable. Humidity is a killer.
