What is a good state to move to for retirement and for semi-isolation?

I'm hoping to retire within the next 7-10 years. Maybe even sooner if possible. I have zero interest in living in an assisted living community or anything like that.

I'm hoping buy some land in a rural area, at least 10 acres or so. I want to build my own little cabin and basically just be left alone. I honestly don't know if I can truly be off-grid. I will have a vehicle so I'll probably go the nearest town every so often for food and supplies. I can get batteries and power them via solar or a with a gas generator. Maybe get a propane stove. So I'll have some creature comforts. I want to have a wood stove for heat.

I currently live in WA state. I do like scenery and climate here but I would prefer to be in a red state. I'm tired of idiots in charge here, the taxes, etc.

The states I'm thinking of are: Alaska, Idaho, Montana, the Dakotas and Wyoming.

I'm curious what people here think are the best states for this kind of life. Does anyone here live in these states? What are the pros and cons? Thank you.

Well, if you want solar energy, you need cloudless and sunny. Arizona does that pretty well.

NH is struggling right now in its continual fight to avoid being turned into MA or ME.

Both states are actively trying to undermine NH politics and turn us blue.

Yeah, but I’m not a big fan of hot weather and being in a desert-like climate.

“Alaska, Idaho, Montana”

I believe those are expensive states to live in.

“the Dakotas”

Perhaps Sioux Falls.

I don’t think I’ve been in South Dakota.

If you like hot and are willing to live at least 15 miles from the coast, Florida has plenty of uninhabited space with plenty of solar power and cheap land. If you don’t like hot, I’d recommend Wyoming or Montana.

Foothill of or Smoky Mountains. A cabin in Bryson City would be my dream.

“Wyoming”

It may get more snow than you’d like.

Perhaps Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa or Indiana.

A lot depends on where family lives.

Wyoming gets hot in spring or summer, but land isn't too bad outside of the western part of the state. Best is few Dems.

“I want to build my own little cabin”

Building costs tend to be high. Often you can buy for less than you can build for, especially if you don’t need to be in a particular place.

Left California after 45 years. We miss it but there wer financial storm clouds building. We are in a multigenerational house, 9 to 81. Only one male so a little crazy and my medicial conditions limit what I can do. My daughter go transfered to Dallas so here we are in McKinney Texas.
make sure the medical is availablr first and foremost. You may want to consider Prescott Arizona or in that area ( Flagstaff). Stay away from “Red” states, they are circling the financial bowl and you do not want to be caught in that whirlwind or whirlwater down. Of go and rent a place for a year and see it is what you want. Good luck.

Northeast Alabama. Actuarially speaking it’s one of the safest places in the country. Too far south for snow/Ice storms, too far inland for peak strength hurricanes. Tornado Alley fizzles out in the flatter central parts of the state to the southeast. Rural enough to preclude any high risk of civil disturbances spilling over. Hilly and high enough to keep flood risks relatively low and to keep humidity more livable than more coastal areas of the deep south. Low cost of living, but if you have the compelling need to visit a city Atlanta, Birmingham, Knoxville and Huntsville are within 1-2 hour drives.

My neighbor Earl and his daughter left for northern Georgia a few months ago.

About ten years ago a neighbor left for Mountain Home, Arkansas.
