Correct. It is nothing new. The Church of Rome has historically been political as have the other two monotheistic faiths. This Pope’s namesake, Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne (800 AD). Popes anointed emperors and kings to establish mutual legitimation. In return they protected the Church.

Yep. I’m rather sure the point of Trump’s post was to take a jab at Pope Leo. And such a jab is richly deserved, as Leo will not stay in his lane.
The problem is that the picture is way too subtle in that regard. Many good conservatives will see it as sacrilegious. That is not an unreasonable conclusion.
I’m on board with Trump’s ideas, but this is over the line. I gave him credit for being smarter than this. Bad idea…
