BREAKING: SpaceX wants to turn Space into the World’s Biggest AI Data Center.
• SpaceX is seeking approval to launch and operate up to one million satellites designed to function as orbital data centers.
• These satellites would provide massive computing power to support advanced artificial intelligence and data processing.
• The system would rely on near constant solar energy in space, reducing operating costs and environmental impact compared to Earth based data centers.
• Satellites would operate between 500 km and 2,000 km in altitude, across multiple orbital shells, to handle global demand.
• High speed laser links would connect the satellites with each other and with the Starlink network, enabling petabit level data transfer.
• Data would ultimately be routed to authorized ground stations around the world.
• SpaceX says demand from AI, machine learning, and edge computing is growing faster than terrestrial infrastructure can handle.
The company frames this as a major step toward a future where humanity becomes a multi planetary civilization powered by space based infrastructure.

>> Be blind if you want. No one’s going to do it until they are ready to go to war. Then that will be the first shot. It will result in everything we take for granted today going away.
I have noticed that you make up a lot of interesting stuff and quote yourself as if it’s true. You could probably get rich writing fiction... why are you wasting your talent here on FR?
Plenty of room.
Fail Safe?
On a rough calculation, the volume in question is about a trillion cubic kilometers, or about a million cubic kilometers per satellite.
If distributed evenly, the spacing between the satellites would be about 100 kilometers (62 miles).
You haven’t heard a word I or others have been saying to you. If a major adversary decides to go to war with us, the first thing they will try to do is blind our command and control and intelligence and surveillance. If one space nuke can do that, and it doesn’t trigger a MAD response because no lives are taken in the attack (well ISS may be up the creek), then what holds them back? Our adversaries don’t do so good in modern conflict because they don’t have our technology but this type of attack would likely level the playing field.
A nuke in space would be equivalent to a Pearl Harbor.
I didn’t make this up. It’s been discussed and written about by defense strategists.
Redundancy. Plus many smaller satellites can be launched at the same weight of a large satellite.

No good if you only wipe out 90% of the satellites. The rest are plenty for defense purposes.
Not to mention, you also wipe out a lot of other countries satellites, which kind of makes them hostile to you.
It is not something most planners would be willing to bet the farm on.
“Why would so many satellites be needed? Why not scale up to larger satellites/solar arrays and fewer launches.”
Redundancy. Plus many smaller satellites can be launched at the same weight of a large satellite.
You don’t take the satellites out in this case by direct missile impacts. You fry electronics by increasing the radiation in space. A nuclear blast puts out tons of high energy protons and electrons. These are trapped in the earths magnetic field and live for years there. These satellite electronics are bombarded by these every time they pass through the field, in LEO that could be large percentages of the orbits. They won’t survive beyond a few days if that.
As I posted to marktwain given enough coverage 1 space nuke would be like poking an ice pick through a spider web.
It would have no effect.
You are being tone deaf. As an example, China won’t start a nuke war with us, but they would start a war to regain Taiwan, which we might try to intervene in. One nuke in space and much of our ability is degraded. There is not an equivalent counter response to this since China is so much less reliant on space assets.
Agree with what you are saying but think we could solve that problem.
The only way to kill Forbin’s Colossus was to make it kill itself.

“I heard they’re shafting us....”
LOLOL!
I wonder how they deal with the time difference with so many flying around out there. Satellite TV doesn’t matter because it is one way. But that massive amount of data needing near instant transfer. Well, I guess I won’t be getting hired for them. Quantum mechanics just ain’t in my tool belt.
No I don’t, but as a former warrior and someone in the space defense industry I work with people who game this type of stuff out. What’s your armchair expertise from?
And we have already covered the earth vs space detonations subject. There was a nuke detonation in space back in the 60s and the lessons from that led to a now defunct space treaty. All your other 2000 earth detonations were tests, very different from an exchange in a war.
